🚫 Myth of the Day:

You can’t have any caffeine or alcohol while breastfeeding.

Let’s clear it up with some evidence-based infošŸ‘‡

ā˜•ļø Caffeine in moderation is usually just fine while breastfeeding. We typically recommend keeping it under 300mg/day (about 2–3 cups of coffee) and watching your baby for any signs of sensitivity—like extra wakefulness or fussiness.
šŸ•˜ For best results: aim for caffeine earlier in the day, after you've had a meal, so it supports your energy without wrecking your sleep or blood sugar. And remember—if you're crashing hard in the afternoon, we might want to look at why that’s happening (hello thyroid, iron, insulin resistance šŸ‘€).
Per Medications and Mother’s Milk (Hale 2017, p. 139–140), caffeine is rated Lactation Risk Category L2 (safer). Milk levels are quite low—just 0.06–1.5% of the maternal dose—and usually peak 1–2 hours after consumption.

šŸ· Alcohol? You can have that too. 1–2 drinks with a little time to metabolize (roughly 2–3 hours per drink) is safe and doesn’t require pumping and dumping. If you’re sober enough to drive, you’re sober enough to breastfeed.Per Hale (2019), ā€œmothers who ingest alcohol in moderate amounts can generally return to breastfeeding as soon as they feel neurologically normal.ā€

šŸ’” Feeding your baby shouldn't mean cutting off everything you enjoy. You deserve evidence-based guidance, not outdated restrictions.

Measles is a virus which spreads easily from person to person, especially through coughs, sneezes, and even just being in the same room as someone who is sick. 🤧 The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. If someone is not immune, there’s a very high chance (up to 90%) they’ll get sick after being exposed.

Symptoms of measles usually start with a high fever, feeling very tired, and three main signs: cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. 🌔 Tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth (called Koplik spots), and a rash soon follows—starting on the face and spreading down the body.

For babies and young children, measles can be especially dangerous. It can lead to pneumonia, swelling of the brain (encephalitis), and a weakened immune system which makes it easier to catch other illnesses for several years afterward.

Breastfeeding and the Measles Vaccine:
If you're a breastfeeding mom 🤱 and haven’t had your MMR vaccine (for measles, mumps, and rubella), it’s safe to get it—even while nursing. The vaccine does not harm your baby, and it may actually help.

While breastfeeding doesn’t directly protect your baby from catching measles, your body might pass some helpful antibodies through your milk after you get vaccinated. Researchers are currently studying this to see just how much protection breast milk might offer.

What About Vitamin A?:
Vitamin A has been used in the treatment of measles in certain patients. However, it’s a fat-soluble vitamin, which means too much of it can build up in the body and cause toxicity. Vitamin A also transfers into breast milk, and large maternal doses during breastfeeding could pose risks to the infant.

There has been a rise in hospitalizations among infants and children due to vitamin A toxicity following the administration of high doses for measles prevention. For this reason, breastfeeding mothers should only take high-dose vitamin A under the guidance of a healthcare provider.
