š« Myth of the Day:
You canāt have any caffeine or alcohol while breastfeeding.
Letās clear it up with some evidence-based infoš
āļø Caffeine in moderation is usually just fine while breastfeeding. We typically recommend keeping it under 300mg/day (about 2ā3 cups of coffee) and watching your baby for any signs of sensitivityālike extra wakefulness or fussiness.
š For best results: aim for caffeine earlier in the day, after you've had a meal, so it supports your energy without wrecking your sleep or blood sugar. And rememberāif you're crashing hard in the afternoon, we might want to look at why thatās happening (hello thyroid, iron, insulin resistance š).
Per Medications and Motherās Milk (Hale 2017, p. 139ā140), caffeine is rated Lactation Risk Category L2 (safer). Milk levels are quite lowājust 0.06ā1.5% of the maternal doseāand usually peak 1ā2 hours after consumption.
š· Alcohol? You can have that too. 1ā2 drinks with a little time to metabolize (roughly 2ā3 hours per drink) is safe and doesnāt require pumping and dumping. If youāre sober enough to drive, youāre sober enough to breastfeed.Per Hale (2019), āmothers who ingest alcohol in moderate amounts can generally return to breastfeeding as soon as they feel neurologically normal.ā
š” Feeding your baby shouldn't mean cutting off everything you enjoy. You deserve evidence-based guidance, not outdated restrictions.
