Many patients are referred to our practice with growth disturbances of the jaws and facial bones. Just like when people are born with a curved spine or with one leg shorter than the other, the bones of the facial skeleton can be affected as well. Patients with facial asymmetry, underbite, and overbite are treated with a combination of orthodontics and corrective jaw surgery. The photos below demonstrate how we do Virtual Surgical Planning, utilizing in office CT scans and digital impression scans, we can accurately simulate the exact skeletal movements that are necessary to correct any facial skeletal deformity. This allows for very accurate and predictable surgical outcomes for our facial reconstructive surgery patients. Patient safety is vastly improved as well because precise measurements and locations of vital structures can be visualized to guide our doctors during complex surgeries like this.

One of the procedures Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons utilize to treat certain types of TMJ (Jaw Joint) problems is called an Arthrocentesis. This short and minimally invasive procedure, performed under general anesthesia, involves placing two injection needles into the joint space and irrigating out the joint. At the conclusion of this, a mixture of a long acting anesthetic and a steroid is injected into the joint. Patients generally will experience a significant decrease in their symptoms of joint pain and improved function.
Facial abscess drainage.
This is a case of a young patient with a dental infection that delayed seeking treatment. A large abscess formed that was close to perforating the skin on the side of the face. It was necessary to drain the abscess through the neck under general anesthesia as well as completely debride the site from the inside of the mouth. Early evaluation and treatment of problems is most important to prevent or minimize problems like this.
Here at Pennsylvania Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery we take pride in the fact that all of our doctors and staff have very diverse and unique skill sets to treat patients and keep them safe. Today we took that fact to a completely new level. We had a honeybee swarm that landed on a tree right outside of our King of Prussia office. With no delay, Dr. Andrew Kanter, full time surgeon and part time beekeeper sprang into action. All of the bees and their queen were successfully captured and re-homed in a new hive. π π π π― π― π―

The imaging technology that we routinely use in the office is something that was not even available in major medical centers just a few short years ago. This is a short video clip from our Cone Beam CT scanner in the Collegeville, PA office. This is a patient that required a treatment plan for placement of a dental implant. This technology allows for real time measurements in any dimension to determine suitability for implant surgery, and 3D visualization. We have also utilized this tool for treatment planning for major facial reconstructive surgeries. Even custom designed facial implants can be fabricated from the scans allowing more accurate surgeries, better outcomes and shorter operating room times.
