Happy World Doula Week!
💜
Labor Doulas attend births in a non-medical role to support families. Pregnancy is often the first time families interact with the medical system; and labor the first time being admitted to the hospital. It is an extremely vulnerable time. Doulas help prepare families for what to expect at the birth prenatally, provide physical and emotional support during labor, and continue care in the postpartum to educate about newborn care, lactation, and ensure postpartum recovery is prioritized.
💜
Doulas also work in the community birth setting. I have supported families as a doula at home births; and worked with doulas as the primary midwife. I ❤️ when my clients have doula support!
💜
The Maine Doula Coalition is doing the work to make this care more accessible to families in our state.
💜
My favorite doula work was supporting my sister, pictured here napping with my niece. Her birth story is not mine to tell, but it required so much surrender. I was rung out after and called a midwife friend to debrief on my 3 hour drive home. Birth workers need doulas too.

Welcome to the world, Dian! Born on the morning of March 9 to a strong mama and supportive papa. I love a morning birth because then the family has the whole day to snuggle and really stretch out the birth day.

This little lady has a touch of physiologic jaundice, caused as fetal blood changes to adult blood and there is a build up of bilirubin, which is what makes the skin appear yellow. As long as it doesn’t appear in the first 24 hours postpartum, baby is rousing to nurse frequently, is passing meconium (pooping), and the color remains in the chest area then it is less of a concern. As a homebirth midwife, I use a non-invasive screening tool to ensure babies are staying in a safe range. I also recommend nursing baby in a sunny window with just a diaper on, as UV light can help the baby break it down. Hyperbilirubinemia is a risk that can lead to brain damage. Most babies clear jaundice on their own.

This is what recovering from an all nighter looks like for me. There is always the push pull of needs to be met: food, sleep, hygiene. This is the only time I use my movie star eye mask;) It is not glamorous, but as I made my way back from the fog, I thought about the quiet beauty of the moonrise, so big on the horizon, and surprisingly orange, as I drove out of town, past the houses and roads of several dear ones to me, listening to a Bob Dylan album that got into my Apple Music playlist somehow, “how many roads…if you’re traveling in the north country…don’t think twice…”

I think about how I got to tuck a family into their bed, all fast asleep in a moment, and taking one last peak at the newborn snuggled on her mama’s chest before departing.

And now I hear the sounds of my kids returning from school downstairs and know we don’t have anything substantial for dinner tonight…sigh. It feels incredibly mundane and magical as I straddle these worlds.

It is always such a pleasure and honor to be asked to walk the walk into parenthood for a subsequent pregnancy. We are all looking forward to meeting this little sister whenever she decides to arrive.

Is there a special name for babies that come when the sap begins to run? If not, I’m open to suggestions.

Happy IBCLC Day!

IBCLC= International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
💜
As a midwife and lactation consultant, I am able to support families in the early postpartum, no matter where they choose to give birth; and continue to support families as long as the lactation journey lasts. It is no small task to feed a baby, or babies, from your body! I am consistently in awe of the creativity, sacrifice, persistence, and resilience I encounter doing this work.

Postpartum is where midwifery care shines the brightest in many ways. We consider the health of the parent and their baby (or babies!) to be interconnected. We call this unique relationship a dyad. Therefore, midwives monitor and assess the wellbeing of both the parent and baby at every visit, which are frequent (4-6 visits in the first 6 weeks) and in your home. As an IBCLC (fancy for lactation consultant) I am equipped to support nursing challenges that come up as well. Early intervention is often key to getting things turned around.
🤱🏼
MaineCare does not cover out of hospital care, and many CPM’s cannot afford to take private insurance either. This limits access to our care. To try and bridge part of this gap, I am offering postpartum midwifery and lactation care to those that have other plans for birth, but would like extra support after baby (or babies) are born.
💜💜💜
I have created a couple of care packages to choose from, or you can create your own from a menu of options. Ask me about newborn screen options if you chose to have an unassisted birth.
☀️❄️☀️❄️☀️❄️
Lastly, not sure if this will get to the right places, but pro bono care is available to any well parents and babies sheltering in place due to the increased ICE activity in Maine that would benefit from some support from this English/Duolingo Spanish learning midwife and lactation consultant.

Putting birth into numbers is tricky business. Here is some context: I started Moonstone Sunrise Midwifery and Lactation during the pandemic while living in Vermont with my young family including a preschooler, grade schooler, 10ish chickens, a quarter Maine c**n cat, a rescue pup, a husband working remotely, and terrible cell service. It became abundantly clear as my practice took off (thank you Green Mountain Care for covering out of hospital providers!) that remaining in Vermont was not an option as I saw my husband suffer under the strain and isolation of being on call whenever I was on call, which was pretty much all the time as I was getting established because we had no social support. It was my idea to move home to Maine (there is a lot to unpack there, but I will leave it at that for now). Was I resentful about selling my carbon neutral dream house in the mountains of Vermont and starting my practice from scratch again in Maine? Yep! We made the move in June/July of 2022 and I attended a total of 6 births (4 primary, 1 doula, 1 assist) from August 2022 to December 2023. [As a side bar: my daughter (10) was in a snow mobile accident with her friend (9) on my husband’s property in North New Portland during a snowstorm the week I turned 43 and happened to attend the first prenatal for my first Maine client.]. I’ll admit I was a little haggard when I limped into Maine after my family had already left Vermont and I was left to finish up births and postpartum visits, pack up the rest of the house, and drive our cat, Eva, the 6 hours to our Maine home, who escaped out of her crate as I was cruising at 65 on I93, not to mention the lingering trauma from the accident and a marriage very much on the rocks. It has taken some time to get my feet under me in Maine. The fact that MaineCare does not cover out of hospital birth is a major barrier to accessing midwifery care. I offer a discount, but it is often not enough. For now, I will continue to keep the door open to birth choice in rural Maine. The sunrises and moose sightings are worth it.

Here are the dates of the Parent/Baby and/or Toddler Meet-Ups for 2026. These are informal gatherings to connect with other families in our community. They are every other Friday, alternating between Maine Mountain Children’s House in Kingfield and Carrabassett Valley Library.

I am a Mama to two, 14 and 9, licensed home birth midwife (CPM), and lactation consultant (IBCLC). When I first became a parent in 2011, two weeks after moving across the country to Portland, OR, away from all my friends and family, it was peer support that got me through. Our group turned into a group camp trip every year, a weekly training and attempted hike up Mount St. Helens, and on-going friendship.

Parenting has ups, downs, upside-downs sometimes, and it is more fun and less isolating when shared.

Our first meet-up is this coming Friday, January 9th at Maine Mountain Children’s House, located at 36 Salem Rd. in Kingfield. Park in the back of the building on Curve Street. Snacks are encouraged, but this is a PEANUT FREE space.

It has been a busy summer for midwife life and as a chauffeur for my kids to ensure they had classic summer experiences. Now that school is back, I am getting the parent baby meet ups going again at the Carrabassett Valley Library, starting this afternoon at 4-5:30pm. Stay tuned for the Kingfield dates and times.

Ben and I celebrated 20 years on September 10th and had a pared down get away to Nahmakanta Lake in the Maine North Woods. Midwifery is hard on relationships and we have both had to work to figure out how to support each other. Unplugging is amazing!

My hoya plant, a gift from a client last summer, bloomed. It gives me a glimmer whenever I look at it in my kitchen window.

On this International Day of the Midwife I started the day by hosting a parent baby group at the local library, had a first prenatal appointment for a family seeking midwifery care for their third, attended a Zoom call with providers around the state of Maine editing a document about levels of care, texted with an existing client, scheduled with another new client, went to my afternoon job as an After School Care coordinator at a local preschool, had a staff meeting for said preschool, and finished the day by baking a chocolate cake for some dear friends that celebrate their birthdays this week.

This work weaves itself into all the corners of my life. It is so fulfilling and so lonely. It consumes me and drains me. It is sacred and oh so human.

May the adventure continue…
