Today, on St. Patrickโs Day, we reflect on the rich traditions of Irish funeral service customs rooted in community, connection, and honoring life.
One of the most well-known traditions is the Irish wake, where family and friends gather, often in the home, to sit with their loved one, share stories, and support one another. Itโs a time where grief and remembrance exist side by side, and where no one is left to mourn alone.
Many of these traditions carry quiet symbolism such as windows opened to mark a soulโs journey, clocks paused to honor the moment of passing, and gatherings filled with food, conversation, and reflection.
In ancient traditions, some cultures believed in a โsin eaterโ, a person who would symbolically take on the sins of the deceased so their soul could find peace. It was also said that tears should be held back until the body was prepared, out of respect for the soulโs journey.
Traditions may look different from family to family, but the purpose remains the same. To honor, to remember, and to walk alongside one another through lifeโs most important moments.
Happy St. Patrickโs Day. ๐
