Sister Serafia and Sister Michael, Daughters of St. Francis, serve in Mercy’s Springfield communities and recently gathered for Mass and lunch with Bishop Rice. Afterward, they took their very first visit to Bass Pro Shops and the smiles say it all.

Recess could wait when Sister Angelique had a story to tell. In April 1998, she read to kiddos at the Mercy Co-Worker’s Children Center in St. Louis. She served at Mercy Hospitals in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas and spent many years at in radiologic technology. Many co-workers still remember the joy and energy she brought to both the classroom and the hospital halls.

He reminded us that the virtue of mercy is not passive - but rather a call to action - showing up for those who are overlooked, bringing hope to those who struggle and walking alongside people who are often forgotten.

These caregivers represent us at our best — the 2024 Light of Mercy Award winners who best exemplify our mission to bring to life the healing ministry of Jesus through our compassionate care and exceptional service.

The people you see here served their neighbors this year in many ways that go above and beyond what people may expect in our hospitals, but it's what those neighbors needed and deserved. One caregiver personally filled up the fridge of a patient without food, another helped a human trafficking victim get to safety, and others tightly held the hands of patients and their families to pray during difficult moments. And all of them lived our values every day, inspiring the rest of us.
