Head and Lateral Line Erosion; HLLE is a disease that afflicts many of the ornamental marine fish in our hobby. Fish suffering from HLLE will develop pitted holes that usually start around the eye area and continue, forming a line towards the tail.

Surgeonfish and angelfish are the most common families of saltwater fish to suffer from HLLE, but other families of marine fish have been known to develop the disease as well. HLLE is rarely fatal, but if left untreated it will cause horrific and permanent scars on the animal.

Causes of HLLE can be from activated carbon, parasites, carbon dust, heavy metals such as copper, electrical currents, endotoxins, ozone and U.V. radiation exposure products, as well as nutrient deficiencies including vitamins A and C.

In this particular case with a Sierra Saltwater Systems clients specie, we have determined the cause was due to a lack of an algae based food source. We have since educated the client on the necessity of an array of food choices and the aquarium is now receiving a daily feeding of sushi nori.

Squareback Anhias, Female (Yellow); at the Atlantis Casino Resort & Spa.

The Squareback Anthias like other Anthias do better in packs of females and one male. If the male dies one of the females will morph and take over the male's place.

The females are yellow while the males are a pink color. They are semi aggressive and will need an aquarium of at least 100 gallons as they like plenty of room to swim.

This Anthias can reach up to 7 inches. Thier diet consists of mysis, brines, flake, and high-quality pellets and benefit from multiple feedings per day.

Cloning at the Tahoe Wellness Center! .....well not really, but a sole Baggai Cardinfish fry growing and it looks like the predators are going to leave it be!

Banggai Cardinalfish are an excellent community fish leaving all other fish, coral and invertebrates alone and will even be hosted by long-spined sea urchins.

There is no secret to getting them to breed. Give them a quality diet and an appropriately sized and maintained aquarium and they will reward you with a new fry every 2-4 weeks. When the female is ready to transfer the egg sack she starts following the male closely and starts vibrating on his side then on the other. While the male shows his readiness by flaring out his mouth. They will do this on and off for some time and then in a flash the egg sack is quickly fertilized and transferred to the safety of the males mouth.

The male will hold the eggs anywhere from 23-30 days and release anywhere from 10-20 fry at a time. Once the male is holding the eggs the female will become more territorial and protect the male.
