Have you ever noticed the ornamental S-shaped bars on the rear quarter panel of a funeral coach (hearse)? They are called “landau bars.” Today, they’re purely decorative, but landau bars once served a purpose and are now in place as a nod to history.

These ornamental metallic bars represent the folding roof structure of an early horse-drawn carriage that was invented in the mid-18th century. This carriage had a fully functional landau bar to open and close the fabric roof. The bars were named after a town in Germany where the vehicle was first constructed. The German name is landauer, short for landauer wagen.

As automobile-based coaches became the norm, manufacturers continued to display a version of the original landau bars to add flourish and “a touch of Old-World class.” This tradition continues in funeral service today.
