The Caldwell County Health Department is excited to share our latest Community Health Assessment (CHA) with the community.

The CHA is a report that looks at the overall health of Caldwell County by reviewing local data, community feedback, and health trends. This information helps us better understand the health needs of our community and guides future programs and services.

We encourage residents, community partners, and stakeholders to review the assessment and learn more about the health priorities in our county.

🌿 Alpha-Gal Syndrome: What You Need to Know This Spring 🌿

As we head into spring and spend more time outdoors, it’s important to be aware of Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) — a tick-borne condition that can cause an allergic reaction to red meat and other mammal products.

🕵️‍♀️ What causes it?
Alpha-Gal Syndrome is linked to bites from the Lone Star tick. After being bitten, some people develop an allergy to a sugar molecule (alpha-gal) found in beef, pork, lamb, and other mammal products.

⚠️ Common symptoms:
• Hives or itchy rash
• Stomach pain, nausea, or diarrhea
• Swelling of the lips, face, or throat
• Trouble breathing
• Symptoms often occur 3–6 hours after eating red meat

🛑 Prevention Tips:
• Use EPA-approved insect repellent
• Wear long sleeves and pants when in wooded or grassy areas
• Check yourself, children, and pets for ticks after being outdoors
• Shower soon after coming inside

If you experience symptoms after eating red meat and have had a tick bite, talk to your healthcare provider.
