Pacific madrone or uva-ursi?

Both Arbutus menziesii and Arctostaphylos uva-ursi are native, sustainable plants with deep roots in traditional herbal practice.

Why do we lean toward madrone? A friend once conducted unpublished research suggesting it contains significantly more arbutin — a plant compound often used as a marker in herbal analysis.

We’re always interested in plants that combine strength with nuance — and madrone has a quiet kind of presence we admire.

Fireweed is a reminder that renewal follows disruption. This is the way of nature—and the pattern of all things: order, then disorder, then reorder. A constant act of rebalancing. In the midst of the disruption, beauty is hard to see. But it will come. 🌿🔥💗

We like our adaptogens a little weird.

While other companies recycle the same overused herbs, we reach deeper into the materia medica.

Root of Life leads with Astragalus, supported by Devil’s Club and Gotu Kola—powerful yet underutilized herbs that deliver results your patients haven’t already plateaued on. The effect is a balanced, energizing formula with a fresh clinical edge.

✨Traditionally used for immune support, elder flower is becoming Dr. Yarnell’s go-to over elder berry. Its balanced flavor elevates many formulas, and in his experience, the flower offers all the benefits of the berry—plus a few added actions of its own. 🌿

We use Parietaria judaica and Parietaria officinalis interchangeably in our extracts—though it’s almost always judaica. 🌿

They might look a little different in the field, but their traditional uses are identical. Genetic studies show barely any distinction.

Dr. Yarnell puts it best: one herb, two names.

Us plant nerds still argue whether it’s officinalis or judaica… so we gave up and just call it Parietaria spp. 😅

Yarrow — Wildcrafted from the semi-arid Methow Valley, our yarrow is the wild-type Achillea millefolium var. lanulosa — far more aromatic than common garden yarrow (var. millefolium).

It got us thinking: why do some traditions treat yarrow as just a styptic, while others use it for everything? Maybe they were using different varieties... or maybe it comes down to how it’s extracted—tea vs. tincture.

Why Polyculture Makes Better Herbal Extracts

Plants don’t grow alone—they’re in constant conversation underground through networks of mycorrhizal fungi. But when the field is all one species, that conversation gets repetitive.

Polyculture changes everything.

When diverse plants grow side by side, the root systems stay active, the chemical chatter stays rich, and the plants respond by producing more secondary metabolites.

This is the foundation for powerful extracts.

At Heron, our growing philosophy is simple:

🌿 Select cultivars for potency, not yield.
🌱 No tilling, unless we’re starting a brand-new bed.
🌼 Mix it up—diverse neighbors mean stronger plants.
🌾 Include wild-type genetics when possible.
💪 Give them a little stress—less water, fewer inputs = more resilience.

Plants grown this way don’t just survive—they thrive. And thriving plants create extracts that do what they’re supposed to do.
