“Food Choices”

When it comes to changing our body weight and composition (fat and muscle tissue), it's not just about the quantity of food we eat, it’s also the quality.

While there exist no foods that must be cut out of our diet, it’s important to learn about the relationship we have with our foods. Favoring more wholesome options can help support better hunger management and nutrient intake - yet we can still improve our health and nutrition while eating the foods we love most. That is where we want to help you explore and evolve yours!

“GLP1 Considerations”

Ever find yourself wondering about the benefits of including appetite-augmenting medications on your life, yet worry about the side effects associated with them, such as:
-Gastrointestinal issues
-Low energy levels
-Muscle loss

There exists a cause and effect relationship with each of these that can be modified (and often avoided) with nutrition education and lifestyle modification. With each visit, you will have the opportunity to review your experience with our medical provider and registered dietitian to identify and modify any barriers/obstacles to not only find successful weight loss, but improved quality of life along the way, making success possible and more enjoyable.

“Our Approach”

If weight loss was easy, who would need help achieving it? But it isn’t, which is why we are here to help you.

Our program works to assess each patient’s individual differences:
-Genetic biology and lab values, which influence factors such as hunger, cravings, and other areas that impact daily behaviors.

-Lifestyle practices and areas that affect calorie intake and contribution to bodyweight.

-Learned beliefs about health and nutrition - of which there is a massive amount of misinformation on.

The more rocks we can turn over, so to speak, the better we can understand not only where we should begin in a practical sense, but how we can proactively adjust along the way to work toward your nutrition related goals.

Why is Leptin important?
Leptin is another hormone we check to determine if you may be leptin-resistant. Although Leptin resistance has several metabolic implications, when we discuss it regarding weight loss, it increases hunger and decreases energy expenditure. This leads to weight gain. Changes in dietary guidance along with medication management can help resolve this issue.

Why care about insulin resistance and what is it?

Insulin resistance is when your body makes more insulin than it needs or insulin receptors aren't working properly. Insulin controls your blood sugar but does more than that. Although insulin resistance is important to manage regarding your overall health when discussing it related to weight loss:
1. it acts as a fat-storage hormone.
2. it decreases fat breakdown (which is what we want during weight loss).
3. it can increase your appetite and cravings for high carbohydrate and sugary foods.
4. it can impair muscle growth and repair which is important in maintaining a healthy metabolism.

Insulin resistance is a frequent finding. There are measures to address this with both dietary guidance as well as medication management.

I’m frequently asked, why do you need blood work? First, to make sure your “basic labs” are ok and that any medication we may prescribe doesn’t cause harm. Second, we order “special” tests that are not part of routine blood screening to determine if there are underlying metabolic issues that may be contributing to your weight struggles. This information allows us to tailor medication suggestions to you, which will allow the best chance of successful and healthy weight loss.
