Willie Mae Duncan Obituary Obituary
Ms. Willie Mae Duncan (Lil), the beloved daughter of the late Mr. Adam
Barr and Mrs. Mary Jullious Barr, was born on December 3, 1935, and
peacefully departed this earthly life on Friday, October 17, 2025, at
Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York.
Willie Mae grew up in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, where she
attended elementary through high school. During her youth, she was an
active member of Bethesda United Methodist Church for many years,
nurturing a strong foundation of faith that remained with her throughout
her life. She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Luther Duncan, and
together they later moved to New York City, settling in the Bronx. Their
union was blessed with three children. Continuing her spiritual journey,
Willie Mae joined Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in 1978, where
she faithfully served as a member of the Senior Choir, the Hospitality
Ministry, and the Birthday Ministry. Her warmth, kindness, and devotion
to her church family were evident in all she did.
For many years, Willie Mae worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Vancortlandt
Nursing Home, where she cared for countless patients with compassion
and dedication. After the facility’s closure, she continued her career at
Jacobi Hospital, where she served as a Hospital Admitting Representative.
During that time, she also pursued additional training to become a Home
Health Aide—a role she embraced wholeheartedly and enjoyed until her
retirement. Outside of her professional life, Willie Mae found great joy in
cooking and baking. She especially loved preparing traditional Southern
dishes, and her kitchen was always filled with warmth, love, and the
comforting aromas of home-cooked meals. Family and friends often
praised her for her exceptional culinary skills—her cakes, pies, and
desserts were nothing short of legendary.
Willie Mae will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith,
and the love she shared with her family, friends, and community. Her life
was a testament to kindness, strength, and service to others. Though she
is no longer with us in body, her memory will forever remain in the hearts
of those who loved her. Willie Mae now rejoins in eternal rest her beloved
parents, Mary Jullious Barr and Adam Barr, and her cherished siblings,
Anna Ruth, Cleo, and Calvin, who preceded her in death. She leaves to
carry on her legacy of love and faith: her devoted children, Denise,
Preston Sr., and Priscilla; her loving siblings, James Barr, Ollie-Mae Davis,
and Gewendolyn Barr; her treasured grandchildren, Lamela, Cresida
(Husband Perry), Keith, Tiffany, Lasheree, Shalette, Preston Jr., Lamelia,
Ian, and Jamiyla; her adored great-grandchildren, Kyeisha, Genesis,
Kaydence, Grace, and Onyx; and her precious great-great-grandchild, Kyio.
She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church
members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
