Congratulations to the UNC Health Lenoir Pharmacy team for their incredible work, presented at the ASHP Midyear Conference 2025!

The team tackled the overuse of Azactam (aztreonam), an expensive antibiotic often chosen due to documented penicillin allergies. Through collaborative efforts, they worked closely with nurses and physicians to clarify patient allergy information, update charts, and ensure better, safer, and more effective antibiotic choices. This resulted in a 93% decrease in Azactam use, with improved antibiotic selection and long-term benefits for patient safety and care.

We’re proud that this project was accepted in the Best Practices category, recognizing its impact on patient outcomes and interdisciplinary collaboration. This achievement highlights the power of teamwork across pharmacy, medicine, and patient care, proving that cross-disciplinary collaboration truly leads to better outcomes.

With winter weather in the forecast, we want to take a moment to reassure families that we have comprehensive plans in place to manage severe weather conditions.

Our priority is ensuring that patient care continues with no interruptions to safety, comfort, or service. To support this, we have accommodations available for staff to remain on-site if travel becomes unsafe, guaranteeing that qualified staff are always available to provide excellent care.

We also understand that weather challenges can make visiting loved ones more difficult. If you are unable to visit, please rest assured that our staff will communicate any pressing updates or concerns to the patient’s approved contact to keep loved ones informed; however, if you have not been able to connect by phone, please call us at 252-522-7000 to be connected with the nurse caring for them.

Regardless of the conditions outside, UNC Health Lenoir is always committed to providing exceptional care without exception.
