🚨 Heat Illness Awareness – Know the Signs, Protect Yourself 🚨

Heat illness is more than just “getting too hot” — it’s a serious risk that can happen to athletes, workers, or anyone exposed to high temperatures. Early awareness and quick action can save lives.

📊 Why it matters:
-Heat illnesses can occur during sports and everyday activities.
-Core body temperature (taken by medical professionals) is the most accurate way to detect dangerous heat illness — ear, mouth, armpit, or forehead readings can be misleading.

Common Types of Heat Illness:
🥵 Exercise-Associated Muscle Cramps – Sudden, painful muscle contractions. Not always tied to heat. Often linked to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, or fatigue.
🌞 Heat Syncope (Fainting) – Often happens to those not acclimated to heat, especially in the first 5 days of hot-weather exposure.
💧 Heat Exhaustion – Core temp up to 104.9°F, heavy sweating, dehydration, fatigue. Often affects individuals with higher BMI.
⚠️ Exertional Heat Injury – Core temp around 105°F, can cause organ damage (liver, kidneys, muscles).
🚑 Exertional Heat Stroke – The most severe. Core temp over 105°F, confusion, stumbling, slurred speech. Medical emergency.
🚗 Passive Heat Stroke – Often seen when someone is left in a hot car. Infants and older adults are at highest risk.

💡 Protect yourself:
-Hydrate often
-Rest in shaded or cool areas
-Wear light, breathable clothing
-Watch for early warning signs in yourself and others

Heat illness is preventable — but only if you recognize the signs early. Stay safe this summer!

☀️ Heat Acclimatization: Your Body’s Summer Training Plan

When the weather turns hot and humid, our bodies need time to adjust to the heat — not just athletes, but anyone working or playing outdoors. This includes activities like landscaping, gardening, hiking, walking, running, biking, camping, golfing, and more.

Why it matters:
- Helps prevent heat-related illnesses like heat syncope (fainting), heat exhaustion, and heat stroke
- Supports people with sickle cell trait or disease in staying safer outdoors
- Improves your body’s ability to regulate temperature and function in high heat
- Keeps you performing your best during outdoor work and recreation.

How to get heat-acclimated:
- If you’re new to intense outdoor labor, start with 20% exposure to direct sun (about 1.6 hours in an 8-hour day)
- Wear breathable, long-sleeve clothing and a hat
- Stay hydrated with water and electrolytes
- Take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas
-Use cooling towels or ice packs to help your body stay regulated

💧 Hydration is key — it fuels your body’s ability to sweat and keep cool.

Stay safe, stay cool, and give your body the time it needs to adjust to the summer heat!

💧 Hydration = Healthy Movement! 💧

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, staying active, or just going about your day, hydration is key to keeping your body functioning at its best.

💡 It’s not just about drinking water — electrolytes are important too! Drinks like Gatorade, Powerade, or Liquid I.V. contain salts and sugars that help your body absorb and keep water. Fun fact: water molecules follow salt and sugar molecules in the body, so pairing electrolyte drinks with water can help you stay hydrated longer.

Signs you’re well-hydrated:
✅ No dry mouth
✅ Urine that is colorless or light yellow

Stay hydrated, stay moving, and keep your joints happy! 🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♂️

☀️ Stay Safe in the Heat! ☀️

If you or your child are participating in sports this season, following proper heat acclimatization guidelines is key to preventing heat-related illness:

✅ First 5 Days:

Only one practice per day

No more than 3 hours of practice in a single day

No full gear until Day 6

For full-contact sports — no live full-contact drills until Day 6

✅ Double-Practice Days:

Must be followed by a single-practice day or rest day

Each practice should not exceed 3 hours (includes stretching, warm-up, cool-down, and lifting)

💧 Stay hydrated. 🛑 Listen to your body. 🏅 Play smart.
