"For gifted neurodivergent individuals, “success” might deviate from conventional definitions. It might involve forging unique paths, pursuing unconventional careers, or challenging the status quo. Their intellectual intensity, coupled with their heightened sensitivities, allows them to make unique contributions to society, even if those contributions don’t fit neatly within well-recognized, well-trodden paths."

Is a high IQ the only measure of brilliance? Exploring the multifaceted world of giftedness, high IQ, and neurodiversity.

"We found that people with more ADHD traits such as lack of attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity, score higher on creative achievements in both studies. This supports previous research. Additionally, we found that mind wandering, particularly deliberate mind wandering, where people allow their "thoughts to wander on purpose," was associated with greater creativity in people with ADHD. This suggests that mind wandering may be an underlying factor connecting ADHD and creativity."

Researchers have discovered that ADHD’s hallmark mind wandering might actually boost creativity. People who deliberately let their thoughts drift scored higher on creative tests in two large studies. The findings hint that mindful management of mental drift could turn ADHD’s challenges into crea...

“As anyone who’s ever stumbled down the doomscrolling rabbit hole can tell you, justice sensitivity can wreak havoc on mood, productivity, and energy levels. This is because people with ADHD are more likely to ruminate, and to feel the anger, helplessness, and despair that injustice can trigger, preventing them from moving on to other tasks and potentially affecting their mental health. In fact, research has shown that justice sensitivity, along with rejection sensitivity, largely accounts for the association between ADHD, depression, and anxiety.”

Do you become overwhelmed or enraged by life’s unfairness and attacks on social justice? You may be experiencing the impact of a little-known ADHD trait called justice sensitivity.

“Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) tend to fill that advisor role. We are the writers, historians, philosophers, judges, artists, researchers, theologians, therapists, teachers, parents, and plain conscientious citizens. What we bring to any of these roles is a tendency to think about all the possible effects of an idea. Often we have to make ourselves unpopular by stopping the majority from rushing ahead.

Thus, to perform our role well, we have to feel very good about ourselves. We have to ignore all the messages from the warriors that we are not as good as they are. The warriors have their bold style, which has its value. But we, too, have our style and our own important contribution to make.”

“Hypersensitivity — also known as being a “highly sensitive person” (HSP) — is not a disorder. It is an attribute common in people with ADHD. Symptoms of hypersensitivity include being highly sensitive to physical (via sound, sight, touch, or smell) and or emotional stimuli and the tendency to be easily overwhelmed by too much information.”

"Toughen up!" "Don't be so sensitive." "I can't believe that bothers you!" If you are highly sensitive to physical and/or emotional stimuli, you may have hypersensitivity — a condition common among adults with ADHD.

"It is astonishing how elements which seem insoluable become soluable when someone hears; how confusions which seem irremediable turn into relatively clear flowing streams when one is understood."

"It’s the longest in-depth longitudinal study on human life ever done, and it’s brought us to a simple and profound conclusion: Good relationships lead to health and happiness. The trick is that those relationships must be nurtured."

The Harvard Study of Adult Development has established a strong correlation between deep relationships and well-being. The question is, how does a person nurture those deep relationships?

"I describe ADHD as you've got a Ferrari engine for a brain, but you've got bicycle brakes," Hallowell quipped. "(People with ADHD) are just naturally creative, original, think outside the box. ... They tend to be very intuitive. ... They're very big hearted and generous."

"If you manage it right, it turns into a tremendous asset," he added.

This ADHD Awareness Month, a tweet that revisited a passage from Dr. Ned Hallowell's book "Driven to Distraction" is helping people with the condition realize they're not alone.

"This is the allure of the Gottmans’ latest book — and of their work more broadly. Not only do they believe they have found the scientific foundation of lasting love, they think a whole lot of it boils down to how nice people are to their partners during small daily moments."

The renowned love researchers have been happily wed for decades. Would following the advice in their new book improve my own relationship?

"Rejection sensitivity is part of ADHD. It’s neurologic and genetic. Often, patients are comforted just to know there is a name for this feeling. It makes a difference knowing what it is, that they are not alone, and that almost 100% of people with ADHD experience rejection sensitivity. After hearing this diagnosis, they’re relieved to know it’s not their fault and that they are not damaged."

Rejection sensitive dysphoria, or the extreme emotional pain linked to feelings of rejection and shame, commonly affects children and adults with ADHD. Use this self-test to determine if your symptoms match those of RSD.

"The ADHD world is curvilinear. Past, present, and future are never separate and distinct. Everything is now." And that can complicate everyday life, work, and relationships. Here, Dr. William Dodson explains the neurological workings of the ADHD mind.
