🌟 Alumni Spotlight: Hannah B. 🌟

We are excited to feature Hannah, who attended Listen and Talk’s Parent Infant, Blended Classroom and Individual Therapy programs and moved on to Kindergarten in 2011. Hannah worked closely with Mandy Frost and Kim Hamren. Hannah is excited to share the following update about her progress out and about in the world:

“I am a sophomore attending Montana State University in Bozeman, MT majoring in Elementary Education with a minor K-12 Reading, and a certificate in Special Education. I hope to become a Kindergarten Teacher or a K-2 Special Education Teacher. I am currently a Resident Advisor (RA) of 45 freshmen on my floor where I plan events and am there for any of their needs. I am also co-president of a Teaching Club where I help plan events for education majors on campus. In my free time, I love to rock climb, ice climb, ski and anything outdoors. My favorite hobby is concerts, as I love hearing music live. “

Hannah, we are so excited to hear about your progress and accomplishments! We can’t wait to see more of the great things you do. Congratulations from your Listen and Talk family!

🌟 Listening & Spoken Language (LSL) Strategy Spotlight: Model Language🌟

What it is:
To model language for a child who is deaf or hard of hearing, an adult speaks clearly at all times, uses the correct grammar, and gives appropriate and meaningful language in context.

What to do:
• Be aware of a child’s language level and purposefully expose the child to language that is just above the child’s current level of functioning.
• Take care to use clarity in your speech sounds; speak at a medium, measured pace, leaving appropriate space between the words you use.
• Carry the meaning and intention of your words, sentences, and phrases all the way through the end of your message.

Why it matters:
Consistent adult modeling of clear, meaningful language helps children who are deaf or hard of hearing access spoken words they may otherwise miss. Hearing language modeled just above their current level supports brain development and strengthens listening, receptive and expressive language, and grammar skills.

💙 Lessons from Kenya 🎶💙
Post 2 of 2 - During her recent trip to Kenya, Jenny Ignacio brought her expertise in Listening and Spoken Language—and came home inspired.

She experienced firsthand how deeply community shapes family life: in Kenya, family means the whole village. Music, singing, and movement are woven into daily culture, making morning music a powerful way to build listening skills through rhythm, tempo, and repetition.

Back in Seattle, she’s already bringing new ideas into the classroom—including singing familiar songs in new ways (so don’t be surprised if “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” sounds a little different!).

Thank you, Jenny, for your dedication to families here and around the world. 🌟

💙 Thankful Thursday: From Seattle to Kenya 💙
Post 1 of 2 - Jenny Ignacio, a Teacher of the Deaf in Listen and Talk’s Seattle Blended Classroom, recently returned from Kenya, Africa, where she supported families choosing Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) for their young deaf or hard of hearing children.

Jenny was part of a team leading a three-day training for families and professionals. She helped lead morning music, taught a toddler class, and mentored future teachers—sharing strategies to help children build listening, language, and social skills through everyday routines.

Families learned how to incorporate LSL strategies into daily life. Through music, children learned listening skills such as intensity, rate, and tempo. In the classroom, the day was structured with typical learning experiences that included centers (activities) focused on audition, receptive and expressive language as well as social skills. Each day ended with “tea time,” where families got together over tea and light refreshments to collaborate and reflect.

We are so thankful for educators like Jenny who share their passion and expertise not only in Seattle, but around the world. 🌍

🎉👂 Happy World Hearing Day!

Today we join the global community in recognizing World Hearing Day and this year’s theme: “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.”

Did you know?
Globally, an estimated 90 million children and adolescents ages 5–19 are living with hearing loss (source: World Health Organization). Many remain undiagnosed and without access to the services they need.

When hearing loss goes unidentified, it can impact:
🗣 Speech and language development
🧠 Cognitive growth
📚 Educational outcomes
🤝 Social connection
💼 Future employment opportunities

At Listen and Talk, we believe early identification and early intervention change lives. The sooner a child’s hearing needs are identified, the sooner listening and learning can begin.

🌟 Listening & Spoken Language (LSL) Strategy Spotlight: "What did you hear?"

What it is:
When a child gives an incorrect or inappropriate response, no response, or experiences a communication breakdown, the adult can ask, “What did you hear?” to prompt the child to give back the part of the message that was heard and attempt to repair the breakdown.

What to do:
• Consider asking “What did you hear?” instead of an automatic repetition of the message.
• Use the child’s response to gain information about which part of the message a child missed or did not understand.
• As a child is held accountable as a listener, increase the child’s confidence in their listening skills by praising them when they listen accurately.

Why it matters:
Asking "What did you hear?" on a regular basis signals to a child that the adults expects the child to listen and respond. The response the child gives to the adult also reveals information about what the child may or may not have heard. In this way, the adult acts as a diagnostician and has information about which part of the message the child missed or did not understand.
