What Are the Common Misconceptions about Asthma in Children?

1. Most children outgrow asthma: Asthma can improve with age but often certain situations trigger symptoms again. Even if asthma goes into remission, patients may still need to carry a quick relief inhaler at all times.

2. Children with asthma cannot exercise: Once a child's asthma is controlled, exercise should become a part of his or her daily life. Children with asthma can and do excel in athletics. Many Olympic athletes have asthma.

3. Asthma medications will stunt my child's growth: Inhaled corticosteroids are key medications in managing asthma but early studies did find some slowing of growth velocity (up to half an inch) in the first year of use. Since then, subsequent studies have been reassuring, showing normal growth on inhaled corticosteroids in subsequent years and children are projected to reach normal adult height.

Altered mental state or behavior. Confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, delirium, seizures and coma can all result from heatstroke.
Alteration in sweating. In heatstroke brought on by hot weather, the skin will feel hot and dry to the touch.

Flushed skin. Your child's skin may turn red as their body temperature increases.

What Do I Do If My Child Has Heat Stroke?

Heatstroke can be a very serious, potentially life-threatening condition if left untreated. Heatstroke can easily happen during the summer, especially with kids when they are running around outside in the sun and not drinking enough water or taking enough breaks to cool off. If not closely monitored by an adult, the effects of the heat can go unnoticed by the kids and not be recognized until the condition becomes serious.

If a child has heatstroke, first and foremost remove them from the heat and get them to a cooler area, an air-conditioned building or vehicle would be the preference as shaded areas can still be quite warm. Try to get them to drink cool fluids such as sports drinks that contain salt and apply a cold wet cloth to the skin to help them cool down. If your child complains about muscle cramps in their arms, legs, or abdomen, gently massage the area or help your child to stretch it out. In the case that your child is losing their attentiveness or can't drink any fluids, seek immediate medical attention.

Probiotics Can Help Prevent and Treat Diarrhea

Probiotics are widely known for their ability to prevent diarrhea or reduce its severity.

Diarrhea is a common side effect of taking antibiotics. It occurs because antibiotics can negatively affect the balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut.
Several studies suggest probiotic use is associated with a reduced risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

Probiotics can also help with other forms of diarrhea that are not associated with antibiotics.

When Should I See a Pediatrician for Newborn Pediatric Care?

The best time to do this is a few weeks or months before birth, as this will give you plenty of time to build a solid relationship with the pediatrician who will eventually become your child's regular doctor! Also, during this time we can help you put together a sound healthcare plan for your child. If you've already had your child, then the sooner you come see us and bring in your child, the sooner your child will become acquainted with his or her new doctor!

Truly, the sooner you come see us as either an expecting parent or a parent, the sooner we can equip you with the knowledge, insight, and tools you'll need to be the best parent you can be. Overall, the goals with newborn pediatric care are to help make the transition from pregnancy to parenthood as easy for parents as possible, and to ensure your baby is as healthy as can be.
