Social connections have long been encouraged as a source of well-being, and modern studies back this up. Our social lives play an important role in our health.

It’s a timely topic: according to a recent survey from the American Psychiatric Association, 30% of adults experience loneliness every week, and for some, every day.

It’s not always easy to establish or nourish social relationships. As the month goes on, we’ll explore ways to reorient toward connection, focusing on small, doable things.

The yearlong campaign will focus on to***co marketing aimed at youth. According to the CDC, nearly all adult smokers first try ci******es before they turn 18––making young people a crucial demographic for to***co companies.

In their efforts to recruit the next generation of smokers, to***co companies spare no expense. It’s no coincidence that the top 3 brands preferred by underaged smokers are the ones most seen in ads by this group.

While to***co companies profit, the rest of us lose. Kids, their families, and society pay the cost of addiction, disease, and premature death.

Young people are catching on to this predation and speaking out, urging governments to do more about the advertising landscape. We support their efforts!

April 1st is the start of Stress Awareness Month–no foolin!

Stress is no joke–chronic stress increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and respiratory disorders, as well as leading to behaviors like smoking, overeating, or alcohol use that can cause additional health issues.

While stress is an inevitable part of life, many of us dismiss the symptoms of chronic stress or believe that we should be able to just “deal with it.”

There are better strategies available! Stay tuned this month as we explore stress-related topics and share tips to help you reduce your stress burden. Even small changes can make a difference.

😴 Feeling sleepy? It’s World Sleep Day!

Set for the Friday before the Spring Equinox, the day was established to promote sleep health and to educate people about sleep disorders that may impact good sleep.

Sleep disorders are common. Some signs to look for:
💤 Trouble falling or staying asleep
💤 Snoring
💤 Tiredness or sleepiness during the day
💤 Behaviors that interrupt sleep (such as teeth grinding, restless legs, sleep walking, etc.)

A medical professional is the best place to start if you suspect you have a sleeping problem. You don’t have to chase those Zzzzz’s alone! Being evaluated and treated can be the beginning of better, and more restful, sleep. 🌙

Our friends “across the pond” have designated the second Wednesday in March as No Smoking Day. Established by the Republic of Ireland in 1984 and now supported by the British Heart Foundation, it is a day to encourage friends and family members to quit smoking.

We are all in! Any day is a good day to support those who want to quit. Help someone take that first step, or reach out if you want help quitting. There are many resources available on this side of the pond too!
