The Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Center in Kirksville, Missouri is now accepting applications for the Missouri AHEC Scholars Cohort 9 now through September 14, 2026.
AHEC Scholars is a unique two year program designed to enhance the education that students in health professions programs are getting by providing unique training and experiential opportunities with students from diverse health professions programs.
Centered around core topics including cultural competency, social determinants of health, Interprofessional Education, Oral and Behavioral health integration, Emerging topics , Practice Transformation, Virtual Learning and Telehealth, and Connecting Community to Resources, this national program is recognized by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in hopes of preparing health professionals to work in with vulnerable communities in rural and/or urban underserved areas.
Students earn a $500 stipend at the end of each year along with certificates, a unique honor cord for graduation, and more. There is no cost to the student to participate.
The 2026-2027 Cohort of only 15 students will start August 2026 and run through August 2027. The curriculum offered is a self-paced, online platform paired with community-based experiential activities that allow you to network with other students while meeting professionals and learning about local community-based organizations. This program is ideal for students with a strong interest in working in rural or urban underserved communities upon graduation.
