The Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Center in Kirksville, Missouri is now accepting applications for the Missouri AHEC Scholars Cohort 9 now through September 14, 2026.

AHEC Scholars is a unique two year program designed to enhance the education that students in health professions programs are getting by providing unique training and experiential opportunities with students from diverse health professions programs.

Centered around core topics including cultural competency, social determinants of health, Interprofessional Education, Oral and Behavioral health integration, Emerging topics , Practice Transformation, Virtual Learning and Telehealth, and Connecting Community to Resources, this national program is recognized by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in hopes of preparing health professionals to work in with vulnerable communities in rural and/or urban underserved areas.

Students earn a $500 stipend at the end of each year along with certificates, a unique honor cord for graduation, and more. There is no cost to the student to participate.
The 2026-2027 Cohort of only 15 students will start August 2026 and run through August 2027. The curriculum offered is a self-paced, online platform paired with community-based experiential activities that allow you to network with other students while meeting professionals and learning about local community-based organizations. This program is ideal for students with a strong interest in working in rural or urban underserved communities upon graduation.

We had another fantastic Mystery Dx & Dissection event on Saturday! 20 students traveled from across the NEMO region to spend their Saturday morning with us to step into the shoes of a healthcare professional. Led by the amazing ATSU Anatomy Fellows, teams worked together to diagnose and treat a patient with mitral regurgitation. Students then had the opportunity to dissect a mammal heart and observe a human cadaver heart.

This year, KATC Nursing students gave the opportunity to venture into the nursing lab, where students learned and practiced intradermal, SQ, and IM injections. Connecting with our cardiology theme, students also got to learn and hear the different arrhythmias and murmurs using the lab mannequins.

Thanks again to all our wonderful volunteers; we could not have done this without you!

This past Saturday, NEMO AHEC piloted a program focusing on the careers of first responders. Students across the region got to look in-depth at these career paths while also getting to talk directly with staff at the Adair County Ambulance District and Kirksville Fire Department. Students also got to take a first-hand look at the commonly used equipment on an ambulance rig and fire truck. April Dobrinkse from the Adair County Health Department then gave a wonderful presentation on Stop-the-Bleed training. Participants were able to practice packing a wound and applying tourniquets, equipping them with life-saving skills. Students were then given simulated car accident scenarios, which they had to work together to come up with the correct treatment plan as a first responder on scene.
Thank you so much to the Adair County Ambulance District, Kirksville Fire Department, the Kirksville Area Technical Center, our very own AHEC Scholar Jenna, and the Adair County Health Department for providing volunteers and invaluable experiences and knowledge to our local students!

Great highlight on Mid-MO AHEC!

This week, we’re proud to highlight Tim Shockley, director of Mid-MO AHEC , located at Phelps Health in Rolla, Missouri— and administrative project director of the South-Central Missouri Rural Residency Program.

Tim joined MidMOAHEC in 2020 as clinical education coordinator and has since advanced in a leadership role supporting healthcare students across rural Missouri.

A former high school social studies teacher and school counselor, Tim brings a strong background in education, mentoring, and workforce development.

“What excites me most about AHEC,” Tim says, “is the opportunity to make a lasting impact at the intersection of education, healthcare, and community. Every clinical rotation we schedule, every workshop we host, and every student we mentor is a step toward a stronger healthcare system. It’s not just program work — it’s mission work.”
