“Should my 4-year-old be able to say the “k” sound as in “cat” and “back”?”

”My 7-year-old says “wabbit” for “rabbit”….do you think he will outgrow this without speech therapy?”

As Speech Therapists we get asked this question A LOT! The chart below shows the ages by which a child *should* develop the various speech sounds (the ages we use when determining whether a child qualifies for speech therapy). What you may not realize is that public schools do not follow these ages but are legally required to follow older ages in older to qualify kids. This means that even if your child does not qualify for speech at school, they may actually need speech based on typical development.
