Hey! Have you ever felt a bump on your scalp and immediately assumed it’s a pimple? That assumption might be wrong. 👀

Not all scalp bumps are acne. Some are inflammatory, like folliculitis. Some are cystic, like pilar cysts or epidermoid cysts. Some are structural growths, like lipomas. Others are mechanical, like ingrown hairs. And acneiform eruptions on the scalp follow a completely different pattern than a single infected follicle.

The surface can look similar — a raised lump, redness, tenderness — but the underlying mechanism is entirely different. That mechanism determines whether it needs antimicrobial care, simple monitoring, product adjustment, or professional removal.

A painful red bump with pus around a hair shaft is usually folliculitis. A smooth, firm, slow-growing dome that moves under the skin is more likely a cyst. A soft, rubbery mass that shifts easily could be a lipoma. A small irritated bump after shaving may be an ingrown hair. Pattern, speed of growth, pain level, and location all matter.

Identification changes treatment. Treating every scalp “lump” and bump, like acne delays the right solution. At our clinic, we can dive deeper into this for you! Is this a trichologist or a dermatologist issue?!
