Did you know that the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has made tremendous efforts to combat the opioid epidemic and reduce overdoses and deaths? As a state, we participate in PDMP; the prescription drug monitoring program as well as many other mitigation strategies. DHSS also provides free overdose education, warning signs, naloxone administration training, prescription drug take-back programs and more at https://health.mo.gov/living/families/more/. Keeping naloxone on hand can be lifesaving, especially if you have any opioids in your home, if any friends or family members take opioids, or if anyone who visits you takes opioids. You can get naloxone without a prescription at your pharmacy, and there are many local programs that provide free naloxone to those who cannot afford it at https://getmissourinaloxone.com/

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services provides free radon test kits for those who cannot afford them, but you can also purchase kits from your local hardware store. They also cover testing for all public schools and commercial child care centers. You can reach out to your children's schools and daycares as well as your employer or any other physical building where you spend a lot of time to see when their facilities were last tested for radon.
After having many patients with unexplained respiratory symptoms, we purchased a high quality digital radon detector that we loan out to our patients for free and have found multiple homes with elevated levels requiring mitigation.

How much do you know about radon??
-It is estimated that 1 in 4 homes in Missouri have high radon levels.
​-Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas you can't see, smell, or taste.
-Prolonged higher level radon exposure can cause serious health issues including lung cancer.
-Radon is classified as a "Class A" carcinogen by the EPA.
​-The only way to detect dangerous levels of radon is to test the air.
​-Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
-It is estimated to cause over 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year.
​-Radon can be found in both old and new homes.
-It occurs in the ground naturally but can leak into homes through cracks and openings in floors and walls.
-Radon levels can fluctuate in the home during different times of the year and is likely to be highest during the winter months likely due to decreased ventilation.

The American Heart Association has been working hard for over 100 years to improve heart health for people from all walks of life. They provide CPR training, blood pressure management assistance, heart disease and stroke prevention education, and fund lifesaving research. Since 2018 their efforts have reduced death from stroke by over 13%, reduced deaths from heart disease by over 15%, and they continue to provide CPR training to over 22 million people each year!
