It’s the last day of World Breastfeeding Week so I figured I would reflect on what breastfeeding means to me!

I decided to breastfeed Kona because it was free food 😅and what I felt was the best for him; although, at that time I knew close to nothing about breastfeeding.
Those first few weeks of breastfeeding were the hardest moments in our journey. Kona had what they told me was a lip and tongue tie but everywhere I called refused to fix them so I suffered through the sever pain (nursing was painful for about 10 months of our journey😖)
As painful and hard as nursing was for me I had a ample supply so I counted myself blessed and nursed through the pain. During this past year Kona and myself had thrush for two months making it super painful (again) to nurse.
I have had countless clogged ducts which are always a pain to get rid of and hurt like crap!
And for the past two months Kona have had two teeth pop through allowing him to bite (🥵 that about ended our nursing journey very quickly)

Our nursing journey hits one year tomorrow and looking back through the challenges and my many doubts I am so incredibly thankful for what God has shown and taught me about breastfeeding and mamas.

Breastfeeding is HARD! Our system is not set up to support mamas who nurse, there are so many groups I had to leave because the misinformation that was being spread was ending journeys.
I hate that our society has made it so hard to inform mamas about breastfeeding. I also hate that when that when a mamas journey ends there is no support for her. It’s freaking hard to make the decision (or have the decision made for you) to end your nursing journey. Formula was made for the moms and babies who need it and it’s in no way a mark of failure!

So in celebrating breastfeeding week and hitting the one year mark tomorrow I want to encourage you because no matter how you choose to feed your baby your doing an amazing job, being a mom is hard work, and as long as your baby is fed that’s what matters!

✨Baby Wearing✨
Baby wearing is one of my favorite ways to help soothe a baby!

There are so many benefits to baby wearing that don’t only benefit the baby! While wearing your baby you get your second hand back all while still holding your baby close!! So that you can still be as productive as you want to be without missing those sweet sweet cuddles! 💗

For the baby it’s the best spot for an amazing nap as your heartbeat helps lull them to sleep! 😴
Baby wearing also helps baby’s build their muscles in their neck acting as some much needed tummy time!!

Did you wear your baby, and what’s your favorite type of carrier?! (Mines the moby wrap!)

Your milk is already there.
It’s there before your baby is ever even born.

It starts out as colostrum, the most perfect first food for your baby.

This milk will be little in volume, but will be so dense. Not only in a physical sense(it is thicker than mature white milk), but it is also nutritionally dense.

Your baby’s tummy will be so tiny, and this milk will be enough. More than enough.

Your baby will nurse frequently..maybe non-stop. But, your breasts won’t be ‘dry’. This constant nursing, along with hormonal surges from birth, will let your body know that it’s time to start producing mature milk.

This constant skin to skin contact will release more hormones in support of milk production.

It is crucial for your baby and your future milk supply to allow unlimited access to your breast at this time.

Within a couple of days, your milk will start to shift. In color. In texture. In volume.

It’ll go from yellow to white.
Thick to thin.
A few drops to a half ounce or more.

Your milk doesn’t ‘come in’. It’s already there. It merely transitions.

What’s a doula? Great question.

✨...and sometimes it may work better that way.✨

🦌In nature, when labor begins, mammals will intuitively retreat to a quiet, dark, private place to birth their young.

🤰🏼In our society, when labor begins, women head to a bright, loud, unfamiliar hospital with strangers to birth our baby.
..And then we wonder why it is so difficult.🤔

The actual physiological process works remarkably well when undisturbed.👏

The human body is brilliant and wise.

The uterus knows exactly how much force to exert on the baby, to protect both baby and body. 💪

The baby knows when it is time to be born. 🕰

The body knows when it feels safe to release and open. ⭕️

Often, when it seems like something is “wrong”, it is our body doing exactly what it was designed to do: wait, rest or pause.

Birthing is not an act of doing, but of being.

✨We birth from within. ✨We don’t need to be rescued.

✨We need to be supported.

✨We don’t need to be managed,

✨We need to feel safe to surrender.

✨We don’t need to be pressured to work harder,

✨We need courage to trust our intuition.

Sometimes medical intervention is needed. Sometimes baby may need a little assistance.

Does that mean you failed? Your body failed? No! Even in an emergency, you can still follow your intuition.

Birth is like a giant trust fall. It tends to work better when we surrender. 🤲

👉Did you need a dark, quiet place in labor?🌙

Let’s talk About the pelvis bone!

Did you know females have a different shaped pelvis then males? It’s makes sense if you think about it, women were made to birth babies so their pelvis bones are more of a circular shape being wiper front to back. Males pelvis bones are more in a heart shape since they do not need to allow a baby to descend through it!

The female pelvis bone have two movable structures; the sacrum and the coccyx! This structures become flexible and can move freely as a baby is descending into the pelvis! This can create up to 3.5 cm of extra space for your baby!! 🤯

There are four main pelvic bone types! Round, oval, heart shaped, and kidney shaped! A round pelvis bone is the most common; however, around 25% of women will have a oval shape and 20% have been found to have the heart shaped pelvis! The kidney shaped pelvis is the least common shape with less then 5% of women having one!

Although what our pelvis looks like matters during the birth of your baby the shape or size does not determine whether you will be able to have a vaginal birth! The baby will shift and rotate as they come down the pelvis and even with a different shape pelvis can find their way down without outside help!

Our bodies were designed to handle the most amazing things in life and that includes birthing babies!
