In Remembrance of September 11, we pause to remember a day that changed our world forever. As we reflect on the tragic events of September 11th, our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones and to the heroes who selflessly stepped forward in our darkest hour.
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is a tribute of remembrance, honoring the 2,977 people killed in the terror attacks at the World Trade Center site, in Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon, and the 6 people killed in the World Trade Center bombing on February 26, 1993.
This stunning image is one of the two Memorial pools that are the focal point of the memorial, each nearly an acre in size, sitting in the footprints of the former North and South Towers. The pools are the largest manmade waterfalls in North America, each descending 30 feet into a square basin. From there, the water in each pool drops another 20 feet and disappears into a smaller, central void. Names of the men, women, and children killed in the attacks are inscribed on bronze parapets surrounding the twin memorial pools. According to the architect, Michael Arad, the pools represent “absence made visible.” Although water flows into the voids, they can never be filled.
