Ever wonder why you get body aches when you're getting sick? Well, let me tell you!

You get body aches during a cold or flu because your immune system creates inflammation to fight the infection. That inflammation is what makes your muscles and joints feel sore, tired, or achy.

Here is what actually causes it:

Your immune system releases chemicals called cytokines.
These chemicals help attack viruses, but they also make your muscles feel tender and sore, similar to what happens after a workout.

Your body diverts resources toward fighting the infection.
Muscles and connective tissues receive less energy and oxygen than usual, which can create a heavy, fatigued, achy feeling.

Fever increases metabolic demands.
When your body raises its temperature to kill the virus, your muscles tense and shiver. This repeated tension can lead to stiffness and soreness.

Inflammation affects joints and soft tissues.
Swollen or irritated tissues become more sensitive, making even normal movements feel painful.

Dehydration makes it worse.
People often drink less when sick. Low hydration makes muscles cramp and ache more easily.

In short, the aches are not from the virus itself but from your immune system doing its job. They’re a sign your body is actively fighting off the infection.

A tick bite can make me allergic to meat? Is this real? Yes, it's a real thing. It's called Alpha-gal syndrome.

Alpha-gal syndrome has been trending all over social media. Wondering what it is? Alpha-gal is a type of food allergy in which a person becomes allergic to mammalian meat and mammal-derived products because of an immune reaction to a carbohydrate called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, commonly called alpha-gal.

Here’s how it works in simple terms:

• A tick bite (most commonly the Lone Star tick) exposes the immune system to alpha-gal.
• The body forms IgE antibodies against alpha-gal.
• Later, when the person eats red meat or mammal-derived products, the immune system reacts.
• Unlike most food allergies, the reaction is often delayed, usually 3 to 8 hours after eating.

Common triggers:
• Beef
• Pork
• Lamb
• Venison
• Gelatin (in some foods, capsules, marshmallows, gummies)
• Some dairy products (severity varies)
• Mammal-derived ingredients in medications or supplements

Symptoms can include:
• Hives
• Itching
• Swelling of lips, face, or eyes
• Abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea
• Coughing or throat tightness
• Drop in blood pressure
• Anaphylaxis in severe cases

So what about chicken and fish?
• Poultry, fish, and plant-based foods are usually safe because they do not contain alpha-gal.
• Symptoms can be inconsistent, especially early on, so many people don’t link it to the tick bite or the food.
• Some people improve over time if they avoid new tick bites and eliminate trigger foods.

If someone suspects alpha-gal syndrome, testing includes IgE blood testing specifically for alpha-gal.

Can acupuncture help treat Alpha-gal syndrome? Yep! it sure can.
