Have you ever wondered what it's like to be involved in a clinical trial? Pulmonary Disease Specialists have been conducting clinical trials under the direction of Dr. Thomas O'Brien since 2005. Many local residents have volunteered their participation for a number of reasons. Some generously want to help advance science or they are suffering from a disease and no good treatment currently exists. Some join to improve their current level of medical care because they do not have health insurance.
Dr. Thomas O'Brien is the president of Pulmonary Disease Specialists. He is a board certified physician, practicing since 1987. Along with his staff of certified clinical research coordinators. he works with other board certified physicians to study pharmaceutical agents and devices directed by the FDA and sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. Pulmonary Disease Specialists studies treatment for respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive lung disease, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension. chronic lung infections, lung nodules as well as sleep disorders.
Clinical trial subjects are the key to success in developing new products and treatment of diseases. The clinical trials that are conducted are carefully controlled studies administered by an experienced team of physicians and coordinators. Some of the benefits of participating in a clinical trial include a thorough evaluation by a specialist including blood work, and EKG, physical exam, and lung tests. In some cases, this thorough testing has helped the staff diagnose other conditions that may have been overlooked. Indigent patients can also benefit from clinical trials as in some cases this is the only way they can receive medical care. Participants are compensated for their time and travel.
