Sky Lakes Wellness Center We strive to empower everyone to live a healthier life by practicing preventive medicine. We will help you live life to the fullest!โ€

Sky Lakes Wellness Center is a department of Sky Lakes Medical Center that strives to achieve optimal health and wellness for our community and the members we serve. Led by a multidisciplinary team, our lifestyle change program uses evidence-based practices that work, helping participants regain a lifetime of wellness, and ending frustrating weight battles. Youโ€™ll work with a physician who is boar

d certified in obesity medicine, a registered nurse, a behavioral therapist and a registered dietitian to develop life-long habits to reduce your risk of or reverse many chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In addition, our dietitian-led cooking classes show you how easy it is to use food as medicine, and our behavioral therapist-led stress management classes give you practical tools to increase joy in everyday living. Introductory classes for yoga and circuit training will help you build confidence to make physical activity a part of your life. Call to schedule a free informational session or to book one of our many other classes.

Happy National Dog Day from the Wellness Center Dog Crew! ๐Ÿพ

You might be thinking, wait what?? Why is the Wellness Center posting about dogs?!

Well, for good reason! Research shows that owning a dog is good for you both physically and emotionally.

๐Ÿ’œ Dogs can be there for you even when people canโ€™t. They offer unconditional love, emotional support, and constant cuddles that help stave off social isolation. A small Australian study discovered that dog ownership can reduce loneliness.

๐Ÿง  Your canine companion can offer comfort and ease your worries. Multiple studies show that dogs and therapy dogs help relieve stress and anxiety. Even just petting a familiar dog lowers blood pressure and heart rate, slows breathing, and relaxes tense muscles. Scientists at Washington State University discovered that petting a dog for just 10 minutes can have a significant impact. Study participants had a significant reduction in cortisol, a major stress hormone.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Among elderly people, pet ownership might also be an important source of social support that enhances well-being. In one study, elderly individuals that had a dog or cat were better able to perform certain physical activities deemed โ€œactivities of daily living,โ€ such as the ability to climb stairs; bend, kneel, or stoop; take medication; prepare meals; and bathe and dress oneself. We would also like to note that this was shown for cat ownership too!

Additionally, if choosing to rescue, rescue dogs offer purpose and fulfillment in our life. So next time you're with your best friend, ask yourself: "Who rescued who?" ๐Ÿพ
