Exercises that challenge the body to resist movement, rather than create it, can be a great way to improve stability and endurance for daily tasks. One example is discussed in this week’s Know PT with K**b PT video, Suitcase Carry, where Physical Therapist, Alyssa Nelsen, demonstrates how carrying weight in one hand challenges the body to maintain an upright posture without leaning to the side. This exercise focuses on core stabilization, particularly through the obliques, while also improving balance, grip strength, and functional endurance for everyday activities.

Knee pain doesn’t always mean you need to stop squatting altogether. In many cases, it’s about finding ways to modify the movement. In this week’s Know PT with K**b PT video, Spanish Squats, Physical Therapist Kevin Sartin demonstrates how using a resistance band behind the knees helps shift your weight backward during a squat. This reduces stress on the front of the knee while still allowing you to move through a deeper range of motion.

Last weekend, Kelley and Meghan had the opportunity to attend a continuing education class called The Modern Management of the Older Adult course by the Institute of Clinical Excellence. 💚💪🏼

The class is designed to help clinicians improve care for aging populations using evidence-based, active treatment strategies. It challenges common misconceptions that lead to under-treatment of older adults and instead emphasizes strength training, functional movement, and individualized care plans. In addition to fall prevention, the course highlights fall preparedness and recovery strategies, teaching patients how to safely respond to and recover from falls. Overall, it focuses on enhancing mobility, promoting independence, and helping older adults maintain a high quality of life and physical performance.

We’re so thankful for their passion for growth and for bringing back valuable knowledge to better serve our community. 🔸◾️

Improving ankle mobility isn’t always about forcing the knee farther forward or pushing through a tight calf. In many cases, the key is using controlled assistance to help the joint move more freely without excessive strain. In this week’s Know PT with K**b PT video, Kettle Bell Ankle Stretch, Physical Therapist, Alyssa Nelsen, demonstrates how using a kettlebell (or similar weight) during a forward lunge can help guide the knee through its full range of motion. This slightly more advanced stretch combines mobility and strengthening, using added weight to provide gentle overpressure and improve ankle dorsiflexion movement for better overall mechanics.
