Peanut butter and beans might not seem glamorous—but in many kitchens, especially those supported by Women, Infants & Children (WIC) benefits, they’re absolute essentials. They're shelf-stable, protein-packed, and build up in the pantry faster than they get used.Since I do the WIC shopping for m...

Next insurance PSA...Farm Bureau here in TN provides health insurance through UMR, which is associated with UHC somehow. I am in-network with UHC, so also UMR. Farm Bureau policies do NOT have to follow the Affordable Care Act (ACA). They have a very strict pre-existing conditions policy. I have learned that this policy extends to preventive breastfeeding care. If a mom changes her insurance to Farm Bureau after she has already gotten lactation care, UMR will deny all further care as a pre-existing "condition". This is so wrong in so many ways! It is like saying - oh wait, you ate food and talked to someone about it, so therefore any further care you get that relates to eating food is a pre-existing condition. I don't even know who or how to fight this one.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of TN has a program to support healthy pregnancy. I am all for this. What was interesting to me today is learning that moms get penalized for not signing up for this program early enough which means they may not qualify for a breast pump. What? Wait a second! The ACA says that breast pumps are covered, so this seems wrong. I have known of this perk for a while, but it was only today that made me see it as the flawed perk it is.

BlueCross is committed to helping expectant mothers have healthy pregnancies. Our Healthy Maternity program offers benefits for an expecting mother through every stage of pregnancy including one-on-one support from a maternity nurse and tools to support her every step of the way.

12 years after the passage of the Affordable Care Act, I am still fighting for insurance companies to pay for preventive breastfeeding help. Today I filed reconsiderations for about 10 claims from Cigna where they either applied it to deductible or assigned a co-pay. This is what I put as my reason.
"Under § 1001 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), which amends § 2713 of the Public Health Services Act, all non-grandfathered group health plans and health insurance issuers offering group or individual coverage shall provide coverage of women’s preventive services starting after Aug. 1, 2012 to include “comprehensive lactation support and counseling and costs of renting or purchasing breastfeeding equipment [] for the duration of breastfeeding”. Cigna has not established in-network lactation counseling, as required by federal law. Federal guidance on the preventive services clarify that, “… if a plan or issuer does not have in its network a provider who can provide the particular service, then the plan or issuer must cover the item or service when performed by an out-of-network provider and not impose cost-sharing with respect to the item or service.”

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most health insurance plans must cover all FDA-approved, cleared, or granted birth control – and related services – and other important preventive health care needs, including breastfeeding supplies, lactation consultations, and well-woman visits. Passing this on, especially for all my healthcare providers friends.

Just a final heads-up to please complete The Well Project’s brief Infant Feeding and HIV Survey 2024 (approximately 10 minutes), which will help us measure impact and assess the need for ongoing education and advocacy.

As many of you may know, The Well Project has been at the forefront of advancing education, advocacy, and policy around breast/chestfeeding and HIV for several years including under our BEEEBAH (Building Equity, Ethics, and Education on Breastfeeding and HIV) programming. After developing and disseminating multiple resources and presenting at numerous conferences over the past two years as part of that program and beyond, we are interested in evaluating any changes in knowledge and attitudes around breast/chestfeeding and HIV – and would love to hear from you!

The survey is intended for all members of our community, including anyone living with HIV, healthcare providers, and others who work in the field.

Again, here’s the link/URL:

Please take this brief (~10 minute) survey to help us understand your current knowledge and attitudes towards breast/chestfeeding and HIV. This survey is intended for all members of the HIV community and survey responses will remain anonymous and confidential.

After over a year of being in-network with Ambetter, I am finally being paid! Bills were denied for "code not appropriate for provider" - I was billing for lactation classes with a diagnosis of lactating woman - if a lactation consultant cannot bill for that, who can!? Someone finally advocated for me within the company and now those codes are being paid. Thank goodness!
