We do a lot of work improving indoor air quality for Head Starts. I have spoken with dozens of directors, administrators, and health professionals with programs in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland ... GA, FL, LA, TX, SC in the last few weeks doing some primary research.

Although not the goal of the research project, other data clearly indicates that if you work helping underserved families and kids you're happier and more pleasant on the phone.

FacilitiesNet interviews Dan Boggio, the founder and executive chairman of PBK Architects, reviews the data connecting clean air to improved academic performance. Houston-based PBK is an engineering and architectural firm with significant experience in K-12 through higher-ed. The firm's 850 professionals span 25 U.S. offices and have completed over 18,000 projects.

According to Boggio, one key benefit of good IAQ to students is improved health, which plays a role in them being more awake and alert throughout the school day. Thus, it will allow students to pay more attention to and learn more from their studies. In addition, monitoring IAQ in schools and providing that data to students can help them feel confident in their facilities. Meaning that they know the establishment they are attending cares about their health and well-being. In turn, this all plays into an overall improved performance for the students academically.
