I remember a while back seeing a hand written message covering the back window of a car. It read, “Please be patient….driver is learning to drive a stick shift.” Seeing that sign, I immediately felt compassion and kindness for a driver whose driving skills (or lack thereof) might have evoked frustration from me on a normal day.
This made me think of a time when I was honked at on the road. I don’t remember what I did wrong, but I’m sure my driving deserved it. The problem was, I was overcome with a deep grief the depths of which I had never before known, and I was just a mess….living on auto pilot. I’m pretty confident that if the other driver knew, the horn would not have been honked.
What would life be like if we wore signs with even a glimmer or hint at the types of things we were dealing with? Would the world be a more gentle, kind, and compassionate place? The truth is that even though there are no “signs” and rarely any details, we can always guarantee that everyone is carrying something that is heavy and kindness is always in order.
This week’s intention is all about kindness…..kindness toward others and kindness toward ourselves.
As you go through this next week, you will likely be tempted to say an unkind word about someone, snap back at friends or family, or maybe even give another driver a little horn cussing. This tendency is normal and is part of our human nature. When this temptation hits, I encourage you to replace it with a kind word or deed.
When you are starting to be tough on yourself for the flaws and shortcomings that you can’t seem to “fix,” try instead to realize that these shortcomings are a part of what makes you the complex and beautiful person you are. The darkness of your flaws gives depth, beauty, and balance to the many gifts and talents you live out and share with others.
Have an awesome week!
