Music has the power to connect people. Parents can share their music with their teen and vice versa. Showing curiosity about what your teen is listening to can open up conversations without intensity. Try something like, "Tell me more about why you like this song" (and leave out the big reactions). Although you and your teen might have differences in musical tastes and opinions, be willing to explore what they like and focus on the artist's choices. Ask, "Do you agree with the singer's lyrics? Is it meaningful to you, or are they off base?"

What other ways do you connect with your teen using music? Karaoke nights? Guess that tune? Dance parties?

As a therapist working with children and adolescents, I often assign homework. I ask parents/caregivers to practice the skills we are developing or improving at home because consistency is key! What we learn in a 45-minute music therapy session once per week isn't likely going to stick if it doesn't get more attention throughout the week.

Here's an example of how I might encourage parents/caregivers to practice following directions at home:

1. Add music! A few of my favorite instructional songs are "Follow the Leader" by The Kiboomers, "Run Baby Run" by Caspar Babypants, and "Dance Around and Jump Around" by Octopretzel.

2. Use silly voices. How would a mouse sound giving instructions? How about a dog? Or an opera singer? What about a robot?

3. Turn it into a game. Kids LOVE all things play so if you can turn practice time into game time, it's likely they will WANT to practice. For example, practice following one-step directions using the game 'Simon says.'

There is SO MUCH more to be said for practicing skills at home, but hopefully, these quick tips can be helpful for you.

If you are interested in exploring how music therapy might be the right fit for your child or adolescent, feel free to DM, text, or call me!

Did you know... For our clients, who are primarily children and adolescents who are struggling with their mental health, we find that a team approach is what helps make them the most progress. So, one client might have a psychiatrist (handles meds), a pediatrician or primary care physician, a counselor/social worker/play therapist (talk therapy or similar), a music therapist, an art therapist, or a support group all on their treatment team.

Have a question or two? DM, phone call, or email us and I'll answer those for you.

Incredibly proud of the hard work of TN’s Music Therapy Task Force as they poured their hearts into Senate AND House votes for music therapy licensure in TN. More to come 🤩
