Sometimes it's hard for people who aren't struggling to understand: just because you don't "look sick" doesn't mean everything is okay. ❤️‍🩹

Eating disorders are mental health conditions. And when it comes to mental illnesses, you can't tell if someone is struggling just by looking at them.

With eating disorders, there's always more happening beneath the surface than what simply meets the eye. Having an eating disorder isn't just about being underweight or not eating enough—it can mean battling constant intrusive thoughts about food or body image, feeling overwhelmed by guilt or shame after eating, withdrawing from social situations out of fear, or living with a voice in your head that never seems to quiet down.

The truth is, the hardest parts are often invisible: the exhaustion of fighting the same thoughts day after day, the loneliness of feeling misunderstood, and the pressure of trying to appear "fine" on the outside while hurting on the inside.

If you’re struggling, your pain is real, even if others can’t see it. You deserve compassion, support, and care—because no one should have to carry this weight alone. 💜

When you slow down, your nervous system gets a chance to catch its breath.
And when your nervous system feels safe, your patterns begin to soften—not from force, but from safety.
That’s why rest, calm environments, and gentle rhythms are part of the healing work.
So if you find yourself craving quiet lately, honor that. It’s your body guiding you back to balance 🌿

We are so excited that Dr. Anita Johnston is coming to town!

Our Founder and Clinical Director, Stephanie Weatherstone, LCSW, CEDS-C, has studied extensively under Dr. Johnston, and was delighted to make the connection between Dr. Johnston and the University of Tennessee College of Social Work in order for her to bring her wisdom and insight to the Knoxville Community. This should be an illuminating discussion and we hope to see you there!

In addition to our fun chat with last week (recording available on their Instagram page!), we also had the opportunity to present to a wonderful group of psychiatrists for the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Medicine Grand Rounds. We're always honored to talk with other medical providers and share more about the medical complications of eating disorders and why weight inclusive medicine matters so much.

One piece of information we continue to share with other medical providers in these settings is about the misconception that restrictive eating disorders always result in emaciation. This false belief means that people in larger-sized bodies with restrictive eating disorders are often missed and are only ever accused of bingeing (p.s. binge eating disorder very often has restrictive eating patterns), people in "average-sized" bodies with restrictive eating disorders are missed, and even smaller-bodied individuals are sometimes missed due to the false belief that the restriction isn't "that bad" if they don't look a certain way. In all body sizes, restriction resulting in weight loss is often praised. We're grateful for these opportunities to share this information so that people get better medical care with their providers and practitioners learn this important information that's not often part of their training.

According to NAMI almost two-thirds of people with mental illnesses report that the holidays make their conditions worse. Keep this in mind and remember to take care of yourself. You deserve to be your own priority during this time.
