Executive functioning skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks successfully. Think of them as the brain's command center, helping us navigate daily life efficiently.

🧠 Key Executive Functioning Skills:
1. Planning and Organization- Setting goals, creating plans, and organizing tasks.
2. Time Management- Prioritizing tasks, estimating time, and meeting deadlines.
3. Working Memory- Retaining and using information for tasks.
4. Flexible Thinking- Adapting to new situations and overcoming obstacles.
5. Self-Control- Managing emotions and impulses, and thinking before acting.
6. Attention Control- Sustaining focus and avoiding distractions.
7. Task Initiation- Starting tasks promptly without procrastination.
🌟 These skills are crucial for daily functioning and overall well-being. They help us:
🔹 Stay Organized-From managing a schedule to keeping our environment orderly, executive functioning keeps our lives running smoothly.
🔹 Achieve Goals- Effective planning and time management enable us to set and reach personal and professional goals.

Sometimes it is difficult for children to accept help with their speech from parents because of their close emotional connection. Speech is very much a part of your child’s sense of self. Sometimes the parent’s help can feel like a lack of acceptance to the child. If that is true with your child, you can use a responsible high school or college age sitter to help. Have the sitter come along for therapy so that they can observe the therapist working with your child and get instruction on home therapy activities with you. Kids usually think people in this age group are fun and it can be a great experience for a sitter who is considering working with children in some capacity. Having the sitter work one additional time per week with your child is a reasonable goal.
Doing the home therapy activities makes a very significant improvement in a child’s therapy progress. Sometimes it is good to think outside the box to find ways to make it work optimally for your child.

I’m very happy to be working in a dedicated space in the lower level of my home. We have a large therapy room, office, waiting room and outdoor space to enjoy. It has been a very positive move. This summer the children enjoyed working for time with my dogs or to go outside and pick a flower for their mom. I’m so thankful for the wonderful children and families that I serve. Will post some pictures of our space during the coming days.
