We have to commit to healing even when it is not comfortable and when it wasn’t our fault.

Is it a sprint or a marathon? 😆

Sometimes it’s concern or worry. Sometimes it’s excited to have an extra hour. Chances are it’s not being upset at YOU. Therapists understand that life happens!

6 Serious Reasons Adult Children Create Distance From Parents

1. Substance Abuse or Untreated Mental Illness
When addiction, untreated personality disorders, or chronic instability are present:
• Conflict feels unavoidable
• Emotional safety becomes nearly impossible

2. Constant Criticism Disguised as “Concern”
Every interaction turns into:
• Parenting critiques
• Career commentary
Eventually, peace becomes more important than proximity.

3. Emotional Manipulation & Guilt
Statements like:
• “I guess I’m just a terrible mother.”
Create obligation instead of connection.

4. Chronic Emotional Invalidation
When every feeling is minimized:
• “You’re too sensitive.”
• “You’re overreacting.”
Trust and emotional safety slowly disappear.

5. Unresolved Childhood Trauma
This can include:
• Emotional neglect
• Verbal abuse
• Exposure to addiction, parental cheating, etc.
Healing often requires space from the source of the wound.

✨Sometimes distance isn’t punishment. It’s protection.

Sometimes savage comments just happen… Thanksgiving Fun!! Family is the reason for therapy anyway (still savage) 😉
