Emily Miracle, a young, energetic woman and survivor of domestic abuse, was diagnosed with conversion disorder — a mental health condition that causes neurological symptoms like paralysis without a medical explanation. Last month, while visiting family in Kentucky, Emily fainted and later woke up in a hospital bed unable to walk. She wore a cervical collar for several weeks.

When asked what her rehabilitation at Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital meant to her, Emily shared, “My faith in God has got me through it. He gave me strength to endure and the determination of knowing I will get better. It was a pleasure working with physical therapists, occupational therapists and all others who helped me reach my rehab goals during this very challenging time.”

By the time she was close to discharge, Emily was walking again without assistance and even cheering on fellow patients as they completed their own recovery journeys.

Jose Concepcion was on vacation with his family in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, when he was involved in a serious ATV accident. While taking a turn near the edge of a cliff, the ground gave way, and he fell approximately 60 feet along with the vehicle.

Jose had multiple serious injuries to his back and right side. He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he stayed for two weeks before being transferred to Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital for further recovery.

“When I first arrived at Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital, I was so scared of the unknown, but I quickly came across so many great people: Dr. Kibler, Bruce and Callie (occupational therapists), Josh and Kim (nurses), the kitchen staff, Melissa, (chief nursing office) and so many others," Jose said. "Both my wife and I were in need of some personal items and the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital family quickly pulled together resources to ensure we were taken care of. My stay here went from being afraid of the unexpected to feeling like one big family. When I first arrived at Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital I was unable to walk or sit for long periods of time. Now I am able to walk with the assistance of a walker and sit longer periods of time among so many other things. We will never forget how smooth my recovery went at Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital. Thank you!”

Jose made great progress, and we were honored to be a part of his recovery. Thank you, Jose.

When Clarence Trent admitted our rehabilitation hospital, he was extremely weak, barely able to lift himself out of bed, and he required dialysis. We're happy to report that a lot has changed since then.

“I came to Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Hospital with very little strength. When I left, I was able to push my wheelchair, stand and later walk with the assistance of a walker," Clarence said. "I am so thankful to Justin, Dana, Karie and Dr. Kibler, who gave me the push I needed to try harder, and it paid off. Today, I am walking without the assistance of a wheelchair or walker and no longer need dialysis treatments. Thank you for all you did!”

Clarence, your determination and progress are truly inspiring. Congratulations on your recovery!

A Special Visit from a Former Patient 🌟

We were thrilled to welcome back Steven Hotaling, a former patient, who stopped by to say hello and show us how well he’s doing! Last Christmas, Steven was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome and was paralyzed from the neck down. With determination and the support of his care team, he left our hospital walking with the help of a walker. Today, Steven walks independently—and we couldn’t be prouder of his progress!

Thank you, Steven, for allowing us to be part of your journey. Your strength continues to inspire us all!
