Hiccups are common in newborns. Their diaphragm is immature and something as small as a temperature change can trigger hiccups. Much of the time it is from eating. Some tips:

⭐Pace feed your baby if using a bottle. Burp halfway through.

⭐When breastfeeding work on a good latch and also employ burping

⭐Hold baby upright for a short time after feeding.

If your baby gets hiccups shortly after eating or not seemingly related to feeding they still might need a good burp!

👶Most hiccups are normal and common in babies but there are a few signs to watch for in case of reflux:

Crying, arching their back, excessive spitting up, rubbing their head vigorously as they are laying flat. These could be signs of GERD.

Happy !

Approaching my 26th year as a doula in and I'm so grateful for the experiences I've had. Doulas do not catch babies - we hold families 💞 and research has proven over and over how personalized support benefits families. What a beautiful thing it is to be a part of something so special.

Thank you for these kind words 💖. I truly love the babies, the new mamas, the whole family (pets included)!

Whoa - can you believe that August of this year marks 25 years of me being a certified professional doula?

My heart is full of gratitude for all of the clients, experiences, insight and learning along the way.

I first certified as a birth doula, childbirth educator, and lactation educator. Shortly after I followed up with postpartum doula training. Through the years I added various certifications such as Hypno Doula thru Hypnobabies, Newborn Care Specialist, cross certified as a birth doula with other organizations. I also love taking continuing education courses. My most recent was on amniotic fluid embolism. My next in queue is an advanced class in Trauma Informed Care.

Becoming a doula was one of the best decisions of my life.

Today's prompt for is sharing how doulas impact birth and postpartum outcomes.

You'll probably see many posts discussing how doulas are scientifically proven to reduce:
Epidural use
Cesareans
Pitocin/augmentation of labor

And these are amazing benefits 🤩. However one of the more overlooked benefits of having doula support is maternal satisfaction with their experience. To me this is huge because not everyone wants to go unmedicated or perhaps they have high risk factors requiring medical intervention such as an induction or Cesarean.

ALL birthing people deserve support. High risk, low risk, planned epidurals, unmedicated birth, planned or unplanned cesarean. Meeting my clients preferences AND circumstances can make the difference between a stressful vs a supported experience.

This is one of my favorite client gifts. It's a beautifully framed poem "To my doula". It was given to me on my last day of doing postpartum with a family who welcomed twins . I attended the birth, saw the sweet babies born, supported them thru the NICU phase, helped in the early weeks and months of bringing them home. During the pregnancy there were some nervous moments as can happen with . The older children were such a delight helping with their new siblings. My last day we all hugged and there were tears. From pregnancy and labor scares to pre term labor to NICU to coming home to ensuring babies were gaining weight properly - this is what I do and love!
