With nearly two decades in the addiction treatment field, Dr. Barry brings both professional expertise and personal experience to his work. In recovery since June 1996, he has dedicated his life to helping individuals struggling with Substance Use Disorders find a path forward.

His passion, lived experience, and deep industry knowledge have made him one of the treatment field’s leading voices and influencers.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Kathryn Schott to the East Tennessee Opioid Conference.

Dr. Schott is a double board-certified physician in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and a provider at Pain Consultants of East Tennessee. A native of East Tennessee, she is passionate about serving the community she calls home.

She completed her medical training at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society for compassionate patient care. Dr. Schott went on to complete her Anesthesiology residency and Chronic Pain fellowship at the University of North Carolina, serving as Chief Resident and earning multiple leadership and excellence awards.
Her professional interests include opioid stewardship, medical education, and innovative approaches to interventional pain management.

John is a former Assistant Mayor, executive, and author whose life and leadership are rooted in resilience. After overcoming years of addiction and homelessness, he went on to help lead one of the largest emergency mobilizations in Tennessee history during the 2016 Gatlinburg Wildfires. He later served as Vice President of Operations for a multi-million-dollar construction firm.
Today, through JM Consulting and the Stay the Course Institute, John helps individuals and organizations grow with clarity, structure, and practical tools—guided by one core principle: stay the course.

Dr. Mahoney is an Associate Professor and Clinical Neuropsychologist at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Director of the UVA Center for Psychiatric Neuromodulation Research. With over 20 years of experience, his work focuses on innovative neuromodulation therapies—like focused ultrasound and transcranial magnetic stimulation—for substance use disorders.

He has led groundbreaking clinical trials and authored 85+ peer-reviewed publications advancing addiction treatment research.
