Today is Maternal Health Awareness Day. Tamra King, Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist with Fort Sanders Perinatal Center, stresses the importance of healthy diet and exercise while pregnant:
Pregnancy is the most nutritionally demanding time in a woman’s life. Your body needs enough nutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) every day to support the growth and nourishment of your baby as well as the maintenance of your own body. The goal is to balance enough nutrients to support your growing baby while also maintaining a healthy weight.

In addition to following a well-balanced meal plan, exercise is also important to help you have a healthy pregnancy. There are many benefits of getting regular exercise when you are pregnant. Regular exercise can:

Relieve tension and stress
Protect against back pain
Help maintain muscle tone and endurance to help with labor and delivery
Increase circulation
Improve sleep
Help control blood sugars
Lower insulin resistance so your insulin works better
Lessen your chance of excessive weight gain
Make it easier to lose weight after you deliver
Speed up postpartum recovery
