Despite a long history of safe use and patient need, the FDA has blocked patient access to ingredients used in compounded medications and is in the process of reviewing and potentially blocking access to more than 300 compounded ingredients needed by hundreds of thousands of patients. Let’s make our voices heard.

Compounded medications are necessary for patients with conditions that make them resistant to mass-produced medicine. They can be lifesaving for:

1. Patients with allergies to common fillers and preservatives used to store and shelf mass-produced, commercially available drugs (lactose, gluten, or artificial dyes)

2. Children and adults with digestive issues who are not able to take medication orally

3. People who need customized dosage or strengths not available in mass-produced, commercially available drugs

The FDA’s CURRENT default position is that if there is an FDA-approved Pharmaceutical Drug for a specific condition, then a compounded substance is unnecessary - despite the needs of thousands of patients who may not be able to use the FDA pharmaceutical safely.

This is a campaign that I care a lot about. I’ve donated, and if you’d like to join the cause, you can visit https://gofund.me/1b67f08c to find out how.

DID YOU KNOW that up until the industrialization of medicine, pharmacists also used to be 🌿🥼✨

Once upon a time, it was the standard of practice for pharmacists to be knowledgeable in the study 🌱🔬 We were experts w/ our mortar and pestles, compounding unique medications to fit all our patient’s needs. The terms “herbalist” and “pharmacist” were actually interchangeable.

The true was a place you could go to speak w/ your community pharmacist and learn how the very herbs growing in your garden could help heal your body naturally 😌 This was done FIRST before patients even thought to turn to prescription medications 💊

Even though we don’t see these exact same practices embraced as openly as we once did, it’s these very components of the profession that inspired me to pursue a career as a pharmacist!
👩🏽‍⚕️💕

As a pharmacist passionate about my goal is to educate my patients that
🥗 > 💊 I want my patients to all be “PHORWARD” thinkers who understand how they can mitigate chronic diseases and ultimately, I want to help empower them to take control of their own health!

Herbal/botanical medicine should be used to help support the natural healing mechanisms of our bodies because if you didn’t already know, this is how we can safely mitigate chronic diseases that may develop later on down the line. Its called for a reason 💭

said it best, pharmacists and herbalists can be autonomous! I couldn’t agree with her more that pharmacists can & should be the healthcare providers who are knowledgeable about both natural + conventional medication practices. This used to be the classical role we held within our communities after all…

‼️NO, pharmacists don’t just count pills. We don’t just answer to physicians, fill Rxs, & deal w/ insurance companies. Pharmacists are here to advocate for you! We are here to educate, to help you understand all the ins-outs of your medication regimens, to collaborate alongside you and your physicians, to make sure the medications you are prescribed are going to be safe and effective for you, and to encourage you to always do what’s best for YOU!

🧠💉BREAKING NEWS 📢

Yesterday (June 07, 2021) the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Aduhelm (aducanumab) for the treatment of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s is a debilitating, irreversible brain disease affecting 6.2 million Americans. While the specific causes of Alzheimer’s disease are not fully known, the disease is characterized by changes in the brain that include amyloid plaques & neurofibrillary, or tau, tangles = loss of neurons.

Aduhelm represents a first-of-its-kind treatment (first new treatment approved for Alzheimer’s since 2003) that targets the fundamental pathophysiology of the disease.

Currently available therapies only treat symptoms of the disease while Aduhelm works to target and affect the underlying disease process.

This drug was approved using the accelerated approval pathway, and researchers evaluated its efficacy in three separate studies representing a total of 3,482 patients📊📑

The results support the accelerated approval of Aduhelm, which is based on the surrogate endpoint of reduction of amyloid beta plaque in the brain—a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

The prescribing information for Aduhelm includes a warning for amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA). This will most commonly present as temporary swelling in areas of the brain that usually resolves over time and does not cause symptoms, however some people may have symptoms such as headache, confusion, dizziness, vision changes, or nausea.

Another warning for Aduhelm is risk of hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema and urticaria. The most common side effects of Aduhelm were ARIA, headache, falls, diarrhea, and confusion/delirium/altered mental status/disorientation.

Under the accelerated approval provisions, which provide patients suffering from the disease earlier access to treatment, the FDA is requiring the company, Biogen, to conduct a new randomized, controlled clinical trial to verify the drug’s clinical benefit. If the trial fails to verify clinical benefit, the FDA may initiate proceedings to withdraw approval of the drug.

Thoughts on this new therapy? 🤔💭 Please share with me in the comments below!

D I D Y O U H E A R 💉

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration + CDC are calling for a pause on J&J shot administration while they investigate a possible link to clot formation in certain patient populations.

Data in review involves six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot known as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) that was seen in individuals post J&J vaccine. These cases of clotting, in combination with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia), occurred among women 18-48yo, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination.

Treatment of this specific type of blood clot is different from the treatment that might typically be administered. Usually, an anticoagulant drug like heparin is used to treat blood clots. However, in this setting, administration of heparin may be dangerous, and alternative treatments need to be given.

The CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) tomorrow to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. The FDA will also review that analysis as it investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, a pause in the use of this vaccine has been recommended out of an abundance of caution. As of right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare.
