Into the Data: qPCR in Action

Ever wonder how we count microbes?
Through CENSUS® qPCR, we identify and quantify key microbial groups with extraordinary sensitivity.

Example: Need to know if specific microbes are driving natural source zone depletion (NSZD) at a remediation site? qPCR can find out, even in challenging conditions.

Precision at scale: CENSUS® qPCR detects microbial activity even at low abundance, providing crucial insights for oil and gas, remediation, and more.

Here’s a continuation of the closing session highlights shared by symposium leaders at the Battelle Bioremediation Symposium in Boston. These insights reflect what’s currently working in the field.

What’s working:
-Biostimulation, when done properly
-MNA, with growing acceptance
-ZVI/EISB combinations for chlorinated organics
-Bioaugmentation and treatment trains at mixed contaminant sites
-Tools such as CSIA, new biomarkers (e.g., benzene), and Bio-Traps® (Microbial Insights)
-Tracers to plan and track amendment distribution

For over 25 years, Microbial Insights has offered Bio-Traps as a tool to effectively evaluate remediation products using In Situ Microcosms (ISM) as well as Stable Isotope Probing (SIP) to document and prove biodegradation. Wastewater Treatment: A World of Opportunity

đź’§ Common Problem: Inefficient microbial activity in treatment systems can lead to poor water quality and increased operational costs.

đź’ˇ Where We Come In: Our tools identify critical microbial populations and their functionality, enabling operators to optimize treatment processes and maintain compliance.

🛠️ What We Offer: QuantArray® BGC quantifies microorganisms or functional genes responsible for processes in the nitrogen cycle including nitrification, denitrification, and anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox).

Stable Isotope Probing (SIP): Groundbreaking science with practical power.

Across Europe, environmental consultants are under increasing pressure to demonstrate conclusive, in situ evidence of contaminant degradation.

That’s where SIP comes in.

Combining stable carbon isotopes with MI’s Bio-Trap® technology, SIP traces a 13C-labeled version of a site contaminant to the end products of microbial metabolism, proving that biodegradation is occurring under existing conditions.

Why SIP matters: MNA support for regulatory compliance
-Feasibility studies for enhanced bioremediation
-More informed decisions = more cost-effective solutions

Already in use for over a decade across multiple European countries, SIP is transforming how site investigations are approached.

Last week, Battelle Bioremediation Symposium wrapped up another outstanding year of scientific exchange in Boston. Attached is a slide from the closing presentations prepared by session leaders to illustrate the trajectory of our industry. As you can see:

Molecular biological tools are more essential than ever for building strong CSMs:
• Visualize the big picture
• Understand attenuation
• Improve remediation efficiency

These advancements underscore the critical role of high-resolution CSMs in fostering informed decision-making, boosting confidence in remediation design, and achieving more predictable and cost-effective outcomes. Microbes are integral to every remedial process, and we are thrilled to support our industry in enhancing our understanding of these essential players!

The First Step: Sample Preparation

How does your sample’s journey begin?

At Microbial Insights, it starts with careful preparation. Whether it’s groundwater, soil, or pipeline biofilm, we extract microbial DNA or RNA, ensuring every sample tells its unique story.

🔬 Fun Fact: Our extraction methods can handle everything from remote mine samples to oil field corrosion sites, maintaining the integrity of microbial data.

💡 Why it matters: Proper preparation ensures downstream tools like qPCR or QuantArray® provide results that represent the field conditions instead of arrived at the laboratory.
