Food Sensitivities: What To Know 🌿

A food sensitivity test is a diagnostic tool designed to help identify foods that may be causing immune responses within your body. Unlike food allergies (which can cause immediate, severe symptoms), food sensitivities can trigger systemic inflammation that contributes to a variety of undesirable symptoms, such as bloating, headaches, brain fog, skin issues, fatigue, mood changes, among others. This simple blood test checks for sensitivities to 166 different foods! Dr. Lela discusses the importance of food sensitivity testing to healing leaky gut on her most recent appearance of Living East Tennessee - watch the full video below:

Chronic inflammation is at the root of many health conditions, from joint pain to autoimmune diseases. Although it is best to see a medical provider to identify what is triggering your inflammation, there are modifications you can make at home to ease symptoms.

Removing the most common allergens from your diet is a great way to determine if a food sensitivity could be causing an immune response within your body, resulting in unwanted symptoms. If symptoms improve by removing these foods, they are likely responsible for inflammation. Food groups, like gluten, dairy, corn, soy, cane sugar, and nightshades are most commonly responsible for triggering immune responses; however, food sensitivities can be caused by a variety of foods, so food sensitivities are best detected via food sensitivity testing.

Curcumin, found in turmeric, is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that can also help decrease inflammation. It is a natural way to fight pain and inflammation instead of using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen, or corticosteroids.

Can medications make chronic disease symptoms worse?

On her latest Living East Tennessee appearance, Dr. Lela discusses the connection between leaky gut and autoimmune conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis, and how many commonly used medications can make symptoms worse. First-line treatments, such as methotrexate, and other agents commonly used to treat painful conditions, like anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids, can further break down the gut lining, resulting in worsening symptoms and the need to increase the dosage of these medications.

Too often, we dismiss symptoms we experience, such as fatigue, joint pain, or headaches, writing them off as the result of not sleeping enough, working out too hard, etc. Over time, we may seek medical care for these symptoms once they start affecting our daily lives; however, simply medicating the symptoms comes with a cost. On her latest segment on Living East Tennessee, Dr. Lela discusses the importance of identifying your symptoms early.

What Is Molecular Mimicry - And How Does It Trigger Autoimmunity? 🧬

Sometimes the immune system encounters foreign invaders - such as viruses, bacteria, or undigested food particles. Some of these pathogens contain protein sequences that closely resemble your own body's tissues or DNA. Your immune system creates antibodies to fight these foreign invaders; however, those same antibodies can mistakenly attack your own cells due to the similarity in structure, leading to autoimmune symptoms and disease. Dr. Lela discusses molecular mimicry on her latest Living East Tennessee segment - click the following link to watch the full video! https://youtu.be/hpvRlFTyurA?si=Lk9shmU3Q4aiGzBE

Food Variety & Leaky Gut: Why It Matters 🥦

Including a variety of foods is important to healing leaky gut, because if you repetitively eat the same foods, your immune system may begin to target those foods, leading to sensitivities that create an immune response when ingested - causing systemic inflammation and related symptoms. Check out what Dr. Lela had to say on the importance of adding variety to your diet on her most recent appearance on Living East Tennessee!

Our Story

The Functional Medicine MD is the Premier Functional Medicine and IV Therapy Clinic in McHenry, Lake and Boone Counties. Founded in 2018 by Dr. Lela Iduna – a Yale trained Medical Doctor and IFM certified functional medicine practitioner with over 25 years of experience in medicine. Functional medicine looks at the root cause of illness – unlike Western medicine which ascribes a pill to a diagnosis. Sometimes there’s no diagnosis for diseases and those are the ones that Western medicine is not good at. For example, non-specific abdominal pain is often very frustrating to patients because all the tests never leave a definite diagnosis. Functional medicine looks at the biochemistry of each cell and does specific stool testing and food allergy testing to help treat these non-specific symptoms. The Functional Medicine MD offers a full range of wellness-optimizing services, including functional medicine treatments and tests (ANS testing, Nitric Oxide testing, early cancer detection with the IvyGene test), IV Hydration Therapy, IV Vitamin Therapy, Chelation Therapy, Growth Factor Injections, Argentyn 23 Colloidal Silver Therapy and extensive lab work options.
