Recovering from glaucoma surgery is different for everyone, but here’s what you can usually expect:

Most patients start noticing improvements in their vision within a few days to a few weeks. In rare cases, it may take a few months — and that’s normal. Your recovery time depends on factors such as the type of surgery you had, the severity of your glaucoma, the medications you take, and how your eye responds to treatment.

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) usually has the quickest recovery. More involved surgeries — like trabeculectomy, ExPress mini shunts, or tube shunts — may take longer to heal.

Your surgeon will give you personalized guidance and let you know exactly what to expect.

At Tennessee Valley Eye Center, our glaucoma specialists are here to support you through every step of recovery. If you have questions about your surgery or healing process, we’re here to help.

Ever wonder what kind of anesthesia is used during eye surgery?
At Tennessee Valley Eye Center, the type of anesthesia depends on your procedure and your health history—but no matter what, there is always an anesthesiologist on-site and a nurse anesthetist involved in your care. Your safety and comfort are our priority during every surgery.

Here are the main types of anesthesia used in eye surgery:

Topical Anesthesia (“Eye Drop” Anesthesia)
Eye drops are used to numb the eye so you can have a comfortable procedure. Patients receiving topical anesthesia are also lightly sedated during surgery.

Regional Anesthesia (“Eye Block” Anesthesia)
A local anesthetic is used to numb the nerves around the eye, eliminating all feeling and movement in that area. This involves one or two quick injections near the eye after a sedative has been given to make you sleepy for a few minutes.

General Anesthesia
A general anesthesia agent is used to affect the entire body and keep you unconscious during the procedure. Before receiving general anesthesia, patients visit Tennessee Valley Eye Center for a pre-admission evaluation by our nurses and anesthesiologist.

Curious which type of anesthesia you might receive? Our team can walk you through what to expect.

Post-Surgery Tips from Tennessee Valley Eye Center

Recovery is just as important as your procedure. Follow these key tips to heal safely and comfortably:

• Protect Your Eyes – Wear the eye shield or sunglasses provided, especially outdoors or while sleeping, as directed by your doctor.
• Don’t Rub or Touch Your Eye – Even if your eye feels itchy or irritated, avoid touching it to reduce the risk of infection or injury.
• Take Medications as Directed – Use prescribed eye drops and any other medications exactly as instructed. Do not skip doses.
• Rest and Take It Easy – Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and bending over for the first few days to allow proper healing.
• Keep Water Out of Your Eye – Use caution when showering or washing your face. Avoid swimming and hot tubs until your doctor clears you.
• Don’t Drive Until Cleared – Wait for your doctor’s approval before resuming driving.
• Watch for Warning Signs – Contact your doctor if you experience increased redness, pain, changes in vision, or discharge.

Follow-up instructions may vary, so always stick to your specific care plan. Have questions? We’re just a call away! 865-251-0338
