The Mental Health Association serves East Tennessee by focusing on early intervention and supports which help individuals to access and stay in treatment. Mental Health 101 is an outreach program that serves middle and high school students. The program addresses stress management, signs and symptoms of mental illness, bullying, self harm, and su***de prevention. This program currently serves more than 32,000 youth in 105 schools across 28 counties and reduces suicidal behaviors while increasing the number of youth engaged in treatment.
Nationally, fifty percent of all persons with mental illness have their symptoms start by age 14 and most will delay treatment for a decade or more. Youth in East Tennessee don't have to suffer a decade of delay and untreated episodes of illness because of Mental Health 101. In fact one county has seen a 453% increase in youth engaged in treatment because Mental Health 101 prepares students to recognize troubling behaviors and symptoms, to identify the duration of symptoms requiring their immediate action to help their fellow students, themselves or siblings, and where to turn for help.
The Peer Recovery Call Center is staff by Nationally Certified Peer Support Specialists who assist callers with questions about mental health, addiction treatment or support services and link callers to appropriate resources in their community. Peer specialists continue to support clients well after the first contact to ensure the person access treatment or support services to n to only start their recovery journey, but also continue their journey.
Less than 35% of persons with mental health diagnoses are in treatment nationally. However, one should never underestimate the power of peer support as 75% of Peer Recovery Call Center clients enter and stay in treatment. Treatment works, but sometimes the best support and encouragement is only available from those who know exactly what you may be experiencing because they have been through it themselves and are in recovery.
