Remember when our parents worried about the influence our friends would have on us? After work, do your friends go to the gym or the bar? Do they go for a run or veg out on the couch? Do they eat healthy or pig out? Remember that you’re more inclined to follow their example & do the same. Being with people who are on track can help you exert greater self-control & boost your motivation to maintain healthy lifestyle.

Tips for seeking the best medical treatment–overweight or not. 1. Be aware of how you feel & discuss any insecurities or discomfort. 2. Make a commitment to take care of your health. 3. Realize that you have a choice of healthcare providers. If you are uncomfortable, speak up or find someone else. 4. Finally, be an advocate for yourself and your body. No one else knows it as well as you do (Dunham, thatsfit.com).

Sarah Maria (Love Your Body, Love Your Life) says, "Many times when people are overweight or they feel badly about themselves, they are insecure about others touching them or seeing their bodies, so they are less likely to seek out treatment and screenings. There can be a certain level of intimidation -- especially because emotions are involved." Even so, that shouldn't stop women from getting the services they need.

There's also the issue of risk. There are definite concerns about operating on patients who are significantly overweight due to the procedures being more time consuming, difficult and risky. In spite of surgical concerns and the issues listed yesterday, patients are doing themselves a disservice if they don't push for equal treatment and an accurate diagnosis (thatsfit.com, D. Dunham).

The more fat a person has, the more difficult a diagnosis can be. Lumps can be harder to detect, heart defects can be harder to hear and many health conditions can be because of excess weight. Pelvic exams can be difficult and uncomfortable, and overweight patients don't always fit onto routine scanning machines. Drug dosage levels can be compromised, too, as they are often tested on average-sized people.

Fat discrimination happens more often than we think. "Our culture has enormous negativity toward overweight people, and doctors aren't immune," says Dr. Jerome Groopman, Harvard Medical School. "If doctors have negative feelings toward patients," he said, "they're more dismissive, they're less patient, and it can cloud their judgment, making them prone to diagnostic errors."

04/22/2010

For the next few days, we’ll discuss a very serious issue: fat discrimination and health care, a hurtful and potentially dangerous situation. Health magazine reported that women who are more than 20 pounds overweight (70 million in the US) often have a harder time getting cost-effective insurance (or any insurance) and getting an accurate diagnosis or drug prescription (thatsfit.com, 2/2/10).

We know that overweight women face health risks, but there may be serious social risks too. Research shows that overweight women run a higher risk of losing their jobs, being victims of crimes, and are more likely to become criminals. They’re also more likely to find themselves broke. Is a woman's weight causing these negative life events or are the negative events causing stress that leads to overeating and obesity?

IF you agree that too much TV can have a bad effect on your weight and IF you’re committed to losing weight–here’s a radical idea: watch less TV ! Just think: how many really helpful ideas are there that don’t involve pills, supplements, exercise or food? How strong is your commitment to your goal?

04/17/2010

How much time do you spend watching TV? The number of hours spent watching TV in childhood predicts dietary habits in the future. Teens who watched 5 or more hours of TV a day had a significantly higher intake of trans fat, fried foods, fast food, snacks and soda 5 years later! There's no reason to think these relationships between TV viewing and overeating don't continue as we get older. (Jonny Bowden, WebMD)

Back to TV & eating. One idea is to watch 1 hour of TV for every hour you spend being active. No exercise, no TV. Another is not to eat while doing anything else. Eating without TV, driving, working or surfing the Net helps increase mindfulness about your food (e.g., knowing what you’re eating, how fast you’re eating & how good it tastes). A good thing whether trying to lose weight or simply maintain your weight.

I planned to post some suggestions for dealing with the TV today. But TIME OUT! It’s mid-April. Reality check. Try on that bathing suit today and look (really look) in the mirror. If you’re less than delighted with what you see, make a commitment to start changing NOW. If you are delighted, congratulations, but make a commitment to maintain that great body. Healthy inside is a great goal, but outside counts, too!

04/14/2010

We know there’s a relationship between TV & obesity. The more you watch, the less you do physically. Not only does it lead to mindless eating, but one study suggests that just staring at the screen may change brain waves and lower metabolism. And don’t forget the effect of food commercials! But for most of us, the question isn’t why TV promotes weight gain, the question is how to deal with it. Suggestions tomorrow.

Happy Easter! If you’re planning on feasting, eat something healthy and filling first. And throughout your holiday meal, think "portion control, portion control" and then enjoy!

04/04/2010

A final word about emotional eating. There’s nothing wrong with occasional emotional eating as long as you know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and when to stop. You can buy one slice of cake, one cookie, a 100-calorie snack bag. Have one beer, one coke. A fast-food kid’s meal. The key is knowing that you’re in control.

04/03/2010

Overcoming a life-long habit is hard work. Choosing something besides food to cope with emotions can become a natural response but it will take time. Be patient with yourself when you have setbacks and, above all, don’t give up. The rewards are worth the effort. And keep using that list (see below). Think of all the cool things you’ll have done instead of feeding your face!
