The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Nursing is a nationally recognized leader in the education of highly-skilled, visionary nurses. The college enrolls more than 1000 students in undergraduate and doctoral programs. These programs attract extremely qualified students and prepare them for positions in all areas of the healthcare sector. The college's graduates consistently achieve pass rates on licensure and certification exams of 98.5 percent or higher, exceeding state and national averages. The college runs a school-based, nurse-managed clinic in Knoxville, engages in international outreach with faculty and students, and generates practice nursing research that improves health, health care and quality of life.

“What I most enjoy is watching students begin to grow in confidence with their knowledge and abilities,” she shares. “It is so rewarding to see them step out of their comfort zone, gain experience, and demonstrate excitement and belief in themselves with what they are capable of.”

Through her dedication, encouragement, and belief in her students, Leslie Long continues to inspire the next generation of nurses, helping them not only succeed, but truly believe in themselves along the way.

Building meaningful relationships is at the heart of how Jennifer Patrick approaches teaching and mentoring.🧡 She finds the greatest joy in watching students grow—gaining confidence, strengthening their skills, and moving from uncertainty to understanding

One moment that stands out was working with a group of DNP students who developed and led their own project from idea to implementation. Through challenges and teamwork, they remained committed, positive, and collaborative, ultimately delivering a project that was both robust and rigorous. Witnessing their perseverance and success was especially rewarding.

Her favorite moments in the classroom? Those unforgettable “aha” moments when a difficult concept finally clicks.

Meet Jenny Burghardt. 🧡 Her story is one of love that endures beyond loss. In her book More Love to Pour Out, she shares a journey shaped by compassion. Through her connection with the Precious Prints Project, her story reflects how love continues to reach others.

Meet Mary Gunther Scholarship recipent and PhD student, Annette Eskew! 🧡

Annette is a BSN graduate from UT (2003). She has been a nurse for over 22 years serving in a variety of roles and areas including OB and NICU and also surgical areas and ambulatory clinics. She received her MSN in Nursing Informatics in 2012. She currenly serves as a Senior Nursing Informatics Specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The Pediatric Registered Nurse program is a yearlong experience that equips nursing students with specialized pediatric training. Through this innovative collaboration, students gain real-world clinical experience at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital beginning in the summer before their senior year and continuing through the academic year.
