✨ February Resident Spotlight: Marilou “Awiakta” Thompson

A proud Knoxville native, Awiakta was born at Ft. Sanders Regional Hospital in 1936 and met her husband, Paul, while they were students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Together they raised three children and built a family that now includes four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Awiakta is a nationally and internationally recognized poet, essayist, and storyteller. Her work thoughtfully weaves together Cherokee and Appalachian traditions, along with her experiences growing up in Oak Ridge during the nuclear era. A lifelong activist and environmental advocate, she was named one of USA TODAY’s Women of the Century in 2020.

Her books, including Abiding Appalachia and Selu, reflect themes of balance, respect, and our connection to the natural world. We are honored to have such a powerful voice and rich legacy as part of our Morning Pointe of Knoxville community. ❤️

Game day bragging rights belong to Knoxville! ⚾🎉
The Morning Pointe of Knoxville Hot Shots took home the win in a spirited Beanbag Baseball Tournament against our friends at Morning Pointe of Powell - Assisted Living. It was a great game all around, with plenty of cheering and friendly competition.

We were also honored to have Powell resident Bob Brown kick things off with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. To make the day even more special, our Hot Shots proudly wore red jerseys in honor of National Wear Red Day. ❤️
