You have just been told that your loved one is dying, and Hospice is recommended. You begin to feel your anger and grief as they relentlessly wrestle your feelings into tears.
Three months ago, those words were spoken to me. I was mad at the disease, sad for my suffering wife, ashamed to show my feelings, afraid, scared, and confused. Yes, I had lived through the passing of my mother and father, and pets. But never my soulmate, the love of my life, my wife.
It wasn't supposed to end this way, not now, not ever. Why today? She had so much of her life yet to enjoy and for us to share. Where to begin a journey, my heart ached not to take? I needed to do something, and not wanting to do it alone, I called Hospice. Maybe they could send me some pamphlets and a list of 800 numbers as a possible source of help.
There were two Hospice providers in my area, so I called the one closest to me, Caris Healthcare (Hospice). It was late on a Friday afternoon. In talking to them, their compassion reached through the phone and touched my weeping heart. They knew my pain. Immediately, I drove to their office, walked in and hugged them, and began to cry. They knew what to do and how to help us. Within 48 hours, they were with us in our home. My wife knew her life’s journey was coming to its end - but how to help her get from now to then?
