WEEKLY WELLNESS TIP: How’s your gut health? Our body gives us signals to let us know if our gut is okay or not. Things like indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, IBS, and food intolerances can signal to us that we need to pay attention to and improve our gut health, which can be accomplished mostly through our diet. One simple thing we can do to increase the number of good bacteria in our gut, which will improve our digestive and overall health, is to make sure we eat at least 30 different types of plant foods each week. Wow, that sounds almost impossible, right? It’s not as hard as you might think, because herbs and spices count, too! What doesn’t count? “Plant-based” meat alternatives, which largely have nothing to do with plants, protein powders or bars, or anything else that isn’t a real, whole, minimally processed food. Could your gut use a reset? Is all the dietary advice out there just to confusing to know what to do? This pretty much sums up how I got into wellness coaching! Let’s talk about lighting! Did you know that the light you are (and are not) exposed to has a tremendous effect on your health? Do you spend time outdoors? Do you use LED lighting in your home? What about your workplace—LEDs, fluorescent lights? Do you leave a lot of lights on at night and/or sleep with a light (even a nightlight) on? If your answers are no—yes—yes—yes, then your health and your sleep would greatly benefit from a “lighting makeover.” I have been working on this with a current client, and she is absolutely loving the results she is seeing, including better sleep and more energy. This is just one of many pieces of a healthy lifestyle that we can work with in wellness coaching sessions. Reach out to learn more!

WEEKLY WELLNESS TIP: Let’s talk about sleep! How much sleep do you get? Do you feel well rested throughout the day, or do you have a 3/4pm crash and reach for something with caffeine to keep you going? Ayurveda teaches us that a consistent sleep/wake time—yes, even on the weekends—helps us get better sleep consistently. Taking the time to wind down before that bedtime, engaging in a nighttime routine, as well as ditching screens at least a half hour before bed (preferably an hour), will all help with falling asleep AND staying asleep. Ayurveda also teaches us that the time that you go to bed and wake up also has a powerful influence over sleep quality and duration. Sleep is foundational for health, and while everyone’s specific needs can vary, getting 7-9 hours per night—every night!—is ideal. Trouble sleeping? Reach out to work with me specifically for sleep improvement. These tips are just the tip of the iceberg for the recommendations I have for you!

WEEKLY WELLNESS TIP: Ayurveda teaches us that a healthy digestion (“Agni” or digestive fire) is key to good overall health. Some simple tips to help: Slow down when you eat. Don’t eat while standing or on the go. Chew slowly and savor your food. Be grateful for your meal. And don’t eat while upset, angry, or stressed. These small actions will help keep your digestion working smoothly.
