Alpha-gal syndrome can look really different from other food allergies, even varying from person to person!
Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to red, mammal meat and sometimes byproducts of these mammals (think beef, pork, lamb, milk, gelatin, etc.). This allergy is a result of a bite from an infected tick.
Reactions to alpha-gal can be more insidious than other allergic reactions, often presenting hours later with hives, itching, facial swelling, wheezing, shortness of breath, or stomach problems. The treatment for a reaction is still epinephrine, but it is important to be aware of the allergy itself to avoid potential triggers. Allergy testing is important to diagnose this condition and monitor levels of antibody in the blood over time.
Our board-certified allergists can help you navigate this complex condition and so many others.
