Congrats to Riley, our February DAISY Award recipient! A parent said, “The PICU is not a place any parent wants their child to stay long term, and those 10 days were filled with fear, exhaustion, and many tears. Greek Yogurt + Ranch Packet
Ingredients:
Plain, non-fat Greek yogurt cup
Ranch seasoning packet
Fresh veggies, like carrots, cucumbers and celery

The calcium in Greek yogurt supports healthy heart function by aiding your heartbeat.

Salsa + Chips
Ingredients:
2 cans of 14.5 oz stewed tomatoes
1/4 cup pickled diced jalapenos (and some of the juice)
1 diced onion
1/4 cup of minced garlic
Handful of fresh cilantro
Fresh lime juice
1/2 tsp Cumin
Salt and pepper to taste
Whole-grain baked tortilla chips

Lycopene, found in tomatoes, is linked to reduced inflammation and supports the protection of blood vessels.

Guacamole + Chips
Ingredients:
3-4 fresh, ripe avocados
1 diced red onion
1 diced tomato
Handful of fresh cilantro
Onion powder, garlic powder and paprika to taste
Lime juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Whole-grain baked tortilla chips

Guacamole is full of monounsaturated fats. These "good fats" can help lower LDL cholesterol, also known as "bad" cholesterol, and support overall heart health.

Congratulations to Ernest, the February BEE Award recipient! A colleague said, "Earnest is excellent at his job. He takes time to speak with nurses and educate them on their security questions and concerns. He also goes above and beyond to connect with the patients in the hospital. Recently, we had a patient having a hard week. Earnest took time to say hi to the patient and let them give him an airbrush tattoo with their arts and crafts kit. He took the time to connect with them and to make their day better. This is one of the many reasons why he is deserving of this award."

Evelyn spent time in our NICU after an emergency cesarean section at 32 weeks and 6 days. Thanks to the specialized care she received, Evelyn recently celebrated a huge milestone - her first birthday! Her mom said, “I will never forget the specialists, the lactation consultants, the walks to the milk lab, the arts and crafts, the beads of courage, the books. You guys have a way of bringing light to us NICU parents. Thank you for saving my baby girl. She is now overachieving and beyond her corrected and actual age milestones, all thanks to Children’s Hospital!”

Congrats to Alexa, our January DAISY Award recipient! A parent said, "Alexa has a great bedside manner, she’s compassionate and shows empathy. My daughter was crying all day wanting to go home and Alexa braided her hair. I know that is not in her job description, but she made our days a little brighter, not only that but the days we had her, she made sure that my daughter had everything she needed, answered, and addressed any concerns we had. Sometimes in your job, you catch patients and families in some of their worst times, how you talk to them and treat them impacts their entire stay. Thanks for making our days a little brighter and thank you Alexa for going above and beyond for your patients and family members."

HenLee spent 26 days in the NICU when he was diagnosed with a rare condition, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Despite his challenges at birth, he recently celebrated his first birthday! As a one-year-old, HenLee loves to eat everything in sight and play with his big sister.

His mom said, “Every single department at ETCH was truly amazing to us—The Nurses and Doctors are top-tier. Thanks to the Good Lord Above, Dr. Vaughn & all nurses on HenLee’s care team—we are home and have been thriving since! HenLee is overcoming every single obstacle thus far! No place beats ETCH! Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.”

We are excited to provide a new automated external defibrillator (AED) for Campbell County High School's weight room. This new AED will provide a strong cardiac emergency response plan to benefit high school students across all CCHS sports teams (Campbell County Athletics). We are grateful for the generosity shown through a recent MEDIC Regional Blood Center fundraiser, which not only benefitted our hospital but also made it possible to enhance safety for student athletes in our community by using the funds to purchase this life-saving equipment.

East Tennessee Children's Hospital is a 152-bed hospital certified by the state of Tennessee as one of four Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center in Tennessee and is accredited by the Joint Commission. As a Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center, Children's Hospital offers full capabilities to care for seriously ill children in a unique pediatric environment and offers the services of many different pediatric sub-specialties. Children's Hospital works jointly with the University of Tennessee Medical Center to ensure that injured children in this region receive trauma care at the institution most appropriate for the child's needs. We also assist smaller hospitals by providing pediatric health care training opportunities.

Since our first day in 1937, we have had an "open-door" policy that no child will be denied care because of race, religion or their parents' ability to pay their child's medical bill.

Because children are special... they deserve the best possible health care given in a positive, family-centered atmosphere of friendliness, cooperation, and support - regardless of race, religion, or ability to pay. Their medical needs are closely related to their emotional and informational needs; therefore, the total child must be considered in treating any illness or injury. Their health care requires family involvement, special understanding, special equipment, and specially trained personnel who recognize that children are not miniature adults. Their health care can best be provided by a facility with a well-trained medical and hospital staff whose only interests and concerns are with the total health and well-being of infants, children, and adolescents.
